Hmm..

I ask myself why I should buy a Iphone when its basically just the same as other mobiles in the market...

Are you guys buying it just because its an Iphone and its by Apple just like ipod?

I bought it because it has features that I want and none that I can't stand (like GPS mapping, booooring). The best thing about it for me is the integration with iTunes - for my music and movies, nothing beats iTunes for me. I've been using it for years and years with my iPods etc. so I really appreciate just docking my iPhone and having it update all my latest contacts, photos, movies and of course music. Not to mention its tight integration with Mail and Safari.

Basically, in true Apple fashion - the device does nothing extraordinary (well that's debatable - the accelerometers are a first for a cellphone afaik, and the full touchscreen too [LG Prada doesn't count, it's crap!]) but everything it does, it does freakin well.

I find it to be a great wake up call to the likes of Nokia who have been pushing their bloatware UIs and useless gadgetry for years, never once considering the wide variety of end users - the iPhone is able to be used by anyone who has basic computer knowledge. Stuff like pinching to zoom in on photos, flicking through lists as if you actually would with a real list etc. - I find that everyone who has wanted a play with my iPhone has nailed it in 10 seconds or less.

Oh and yes - the device being Apple has a huge part of it for me. The same reason Ferrari and Mercedes Benz continue to be highly desired luxury vehicles, moreso than the likes of Toyota or Honda.

I'd disagree with that. It's fundamentally different from other mobiles, in a number of areas. A lot of differences come down to how features are implemented and presented.

Yip. That's the reason people buy them ;-)

People buy them because they are an extremely well presented phone. The form factor is awesome, the display is the most impressive i've seen, the implementation of functions for the most part is well thought out. The battery life is impressive for a device of it's class...

There are plenty of reasons to chose an iPhone over other phones, and there are also plenty of phones with the same features as the iPhone (plus more).

Depends what your priorities are when looking for a phone.

Does anybody know the background as to why most GSM operators send out SMS messages with text advising of VM notifications rather than just sending an SMS to activate the VM notification icon that virtually all phones support?

Don't know.

I guess seen as though they are sending a sms anyway, they might as well have it appear to the user? Make it more obvious? A safeguard in case a phone doesn't have any MWI?

The advantage of the WMI however is that it can give you a visual indication of unheard messages rather than just a notification telling you that you have messages. I've received the SMS on numerous occasions, read it but been too busy to ring 707 immediately and then forgotten all about it until later. At least the visual MWI alerts you whenever you look at the phone screen that you have unheard messages.

Even better would be a combination of both however both can't be sent in a single message.

I thought they were sent as a single message? Just with some specific bit flags to instruct the phone to show (or not) the text associated with the MWI status update sms?

Dunno. That's the impression I got from the passage above anyway?

I love my iPhone. It's got everything i need. Wi-Fi, bigger screen, play around with photos. And it's powered by Apple. Full time touch screen is a bonus. Go get one guys. you'll love it. :)

Ahh that could well be the case.

I can send MWI indicators from my SMS gateway here if you ever wanted to test anything. Just PM me.

That would be great. I might pm you later to test a couple of things, see if I can pin down the exact cause of the iPhone not seeing these standard vm notifications.
