How about non-existant.

I get 102kbps over Vodafone GPRS (APN: www.vodafone.net.nz) using an iPhone dl speed tester... could be worse.

The dl speed tester reports an average of 129kbps (3500 samples) for all iPhones on AT&T's EDGE network so far.

For those with an iPhone here's a cool new app released in the last day, which provides AGPS location.

Just tried it, and it appears to work here in chch at least. Pinned my location down to about 20 meters. Pretty good!

I am sorry to say but this speed tester is incorrect. Vodafone's GPRS network is not capable of delivering more than 40 Kbps. The maximum rate a user can have using a Type 4+1 device is 53.6Kbps and that's what we have in New Zealand.

That doesn't surprise me. Although I thought it was a 80 / 20 dl ul split with the 4:1 slot usage?

Anyway the test is here:

Flash speed testers don't work, so this uses ajax. There may be some optimisation going on too?

Oh... Optimisation. Try using the direct.vodafone.net.nz APN instead. All others go through a proxy and the speed you will see is not to your device.

Just a couple of questions on the iphone,

Does the iPhone have a regular mass storage "filesystem" that you can just shove stuff on to and take off or is it the whole ipod saga which needs to use itunes for everything?

how fast does the camera interface come up when initiated?

Not officially. But you've got a *nix system when hacked, you can install sftp, ftp available so far for access to the full filesystem.

how fast does the camera interface come up when initiated?

about 3 seconds.

So someone suggested something to me yesterday re an official iPhone release in NZ, and putting the various pieces of info together... it almost seems obvious who's going to officially bring the iPhone to NZ. Anyone care to speculate?
