I'll second that. The stuff article (here) states:

Orcon will have exclusive rights to sell some iMate handsets in New Zealand and is talking with Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung, among others, Bartlett says.

I reckon the "others" may be Apple. Orcon have always been fond of apple gear, and from what I hear the boss has a shiny new unlocked (presumably hacked, though maybe it's an Apple-hack

) iPhone.

I don't think it's hacked at all.

It may explain TradeMe's hostile position towards iPhone listings (Orcon have "close" ties with them)

Maybe Vodafone's EDGE slip up wasn't really a slip up, but a sign of things to come?

Could explain Kordia's interest in mesh wifi.

Could explain Oron's delay in launching their cell operation.

Would be an excellent product to launch a cell operation with. Plenty of priceless free media exposure and hype.

If it's true, it'd be a cunning move I think.

They're waiting for me to head down to New Zealand, how sweet :)

I already have a Vodafone Supa Prepay SIM for my iPhone ready for the trip but maybe there will be another choice once I get there.

They will not freeze out in the cold. :) Orcon will sell a phone to be used on a "EDGEless" network?

I am sure as soon the 3G iPhone is out Vodafone will put its hand on it.

And hopefully sooner or later we will hear this from Steve Jobs at the end of his presentation: "and one more thing: the 3G iPhone is here"

And one more thing from me: Remember Motorola's RAZR? Was a big hype, uh? They sold millions and millions. Everybody loved it everybody wanted it. 2G only, yeah. And then the 3G version was just not the same and the whole phone become some kind of boring after all.
If Apple will not be able to cope with the fast changing technology in the telecom sector (2G, 3G, HSDPA, LTE, 4G...) and come up later with something new, new design, etc then the iPhone will have a similar lifecycle than the RAZR.

Ah yes, unfortunately it's not that thin anymore. Actually it's 100mm thick now and the weight is 900g. Oops.

Did you read the NZ Herald article? Really? Read it again. This is what it says:

It says the story originated here. I expanded it in my blog yesterday, so that's where the NZH got it from...
