Whilst not everyone needs all the accessories, I think it would be fair to assume that most people would want to buy a few extras. So, your $2100 phone very quickly tips over $2500 which is a silly amount of money to spend on something that depreciates so quickly in my view.
Batman:
well as long as people buy these things they will keep selling them
Very profound!!!

kharris:mattwnz: eg They remove the headphone jack, but don't include the new earbuds with it , which is the whole reason they removed it because they could have fitted one in..
Sorry? My iPhone 7 was shipped with EarPods with lightning and also a 3.5 mm to lightning converter.
Were you expecting them to include the Bluetooth AirPods or something?
Yes airpods. They claim that was the while reason for removing the headphone jack, as they say that wireless is the future, but then they don't include them with the device, and that is an extra $260ish. Many people expect that they wouldn't cost more than $30 to buy.
Lightning earphones aren't the future, they are just a stopgap, and if you want to use decent wired headphones with it, you have to use the lightning dongle.
To make the most of all the features of the new iphone, you have to now buy lots of addons these days. eg fast charger and USB 3 cable, airpods, wireless charging pads etc.
Exactly!
A $2100 phone that is feature rich (for an iPhone) and doesn't include a fast charger which from memory I think is $70 usd, and people are creaming themselves for this phone. Apple is truely pulling the wool over the eyes and right down to the feet.
Check Apple profits
Check Samsung/Huawei/etc profits
To me, it seems they are doing it right, no one else is. Thats a lesson in running a business if nothing else
Dial111: @tdgeek yeah righto lol is that how you justify Apple selling a product with a feature that doesn't work until you buy an accessory at a massive hike?
Pretty much every Android manufacturer that has fast charge works straight out the box. You want me to shell out $2100 then some to make a feature work?
Next you'll tell me that if People want touchID and Apple sold an adapter at $100 to make it work, it would be well worth it.
Maybe Apple should charge for the privilege of updating to every new iteration of iOS as well.
All I am saying is that they run a business and it works, No one else does. You could argue that you can change to a non Apple phone and enjoy the lower costs due to that company making no or minimal profit, so thats a win for you, and they can certainly use your custom. Its your choice
iOS is free as you know, it lasts longer as you know. MacOS is free, Windows isn't
No real need to make silly suggestions in your reply though
iOS and MacOS being "free" is probably built into the hardware price I would imagine

No idea. Apple are not a software company they are a hardware company.

Apple's historical profits and massive cash position stem from one place: Steve Jobs.
Since his departure, Apple is now a much different company, so it will be interesting to see if they will continue their historical dominance into the future.

That actually happened in the early days; I remember paying for the iPhone OS 2.0 and 3.0 upgrades.
tdgeek: No idea. Apple are not a software company they are a hardware company.
Apple is certainly a hardware company, but you'd be hard-pressed to argue that it's not a software company. Many Apple customers buy the hardware so that they can get the software, not the other way around!

Yes, a great model
Make money from hardware, use the free software to add value to the hardware, and massively integrate it.

No they removed the headphone jack so they could fit the haptic engine in. I already have my own QC35 bluetooth headphones (because they are the future) so I wouldn't want them to charge me $239 extra to include them in the box. And if you think any manufacturer/supplier is going to to include a $239 RRP accessory in a box for free then you're dreaming.

I don't want you to shell out anything. If you don't like the price or accessories then don't buy. There are plenty that are willing to.
It is almost users think they have the right to dictate what a company can sell their wears for???
Apple have to justify to its investors and them alone.
The more people like you that don't buy the better for people like me that want to, less of a wait...

They could have still fitted a headphone jack as there was enough room, and this guy has just retrofitted one. So the reasoning that there was not enough room is incorrect according to this video.

My point was that if they really wanted to embrace this change, they would have included the headphones in the box on their flagship model, rather than the lightning plug compromise, which didn't allow for charging while listening to music at the same time. Even with the 8 and X, you still have to buy a wireless charging pad to allow this, and a a power brick and cable if you want to take advantage of quick charging. . The retail vs the cost price will be significantly different. But they have put the price on the X up anyway, which is really just the next generation up from the 7s/8, but perhaps a year early for them.
