Office on Surface definitely not designed for touch. Maybe they should port this new edition for RT

we've already announced a Modern version of Office is on the way for Windows tablets

things are much better if you turn on the Touch Mode from the menu

JimmyC: It'll be available to download some time today free of charge. But to actually create and edit documents you need an Office 365 sub which will run you circa $165\yr in NZ. The viable alternative I've been using for the last 2 years is Documents to Go Premium and Dropbox. Total investment was circa $29 with no ongoing fees.

I would have paid for Office for iPad, but a) not $165 every year ongoing, and b) with the cloud provider of my choice. Huge opportunity missed imo.

If im right you get 5 copys. i have this and share this with family members. imho 5 copys for 165 per year im happy to do. or 120$ i think for students and you get 4 copys??

Technically each family member would need their own account, the 5 copies relates to a single account being installed on up to 5 devices.

In practice I'm not sure how much MS would care though.

Office 365 Home Premium is $114 at PBtech and you also get a $25 prepaid Prezzy Visa card ($114 - $25) = $89 for 5 machines including mobile devices like iPad, 60 minutes free Skype calling every month and 20GB/user extra OneDrive storage.

Office 365 University is Office Pro Plus version is $117 at PBTech for 2 machines in total but a 4 year license with the same above Skype and OneDrive benefits. Only available to staff and students.

There is also now a new Office 365 Personal edition which is for a single user only and cheaper. It's not available to purchase yet AFAIK.

Something not pointed out is that Office 365 home premium can be used by members of ones family (on up to 5 machines + 5 mobile devices) - so its not $165/user its $165 for a few users (note: I am not sure if they can use their own Microsoft Accounts at the moment - pretty sure one can).

I'm a heavy office user and being able to have it on the desktop, surface, IPhone and now the ipad makes things a lot easier as each of these devices has a specific usage scenario - especially if one is a heavy user of OneNote (it works well if the file is on skydrive as it can be accessed on multiple devices).

On the IPad I have been relying on the free online version of office, so it is good to have a native client.

I have tried using the IWorks solutions and while they are good products - Apples idea of document management (syncing via ITunes) had a lot to be desired - so being able to save directly to Skydrive (and I suspect other locations - for those that cant store documents in the cloud) will be more useful. The IPad works well for writing documents on the go, as it has a good battery life and tied with the apple BT keyboard and a cover/stand allows for easy typing.

All I need now is for MS to implement multiple outgoing SMTP connectors in exchange-online and it will be a tidy solution package.

^Actually Apple's idea of Document Management is syncing with iCloud. They're getting away from the local syncing as much as possible lately.

The number of devices Office for iPad can be used on is separate from the number of computers that can run Office desktop.

It's also a recurring subscription lets not forget.

Maybe the Personal Edition will be more realistically priced for those who already have Office on their main workstation and just want compatibility and flexibility on their iPad. Office has been the industry standard for years. They finally release a version for the most prolific tablet in the marketplace and they're demanding a hefty ongoing subscription to a proprietary cloud service.

Businesses already in bed with O365 won't see an issue with that, it's actually just a bonus to them, but we (work) won't be buying O365 subs for our senior staff just to edit\create Office docs on iPad.

I have downloaded the Word for iPad app and am feeling somewhat underwhelmed at the moment. I use Word at home and at work all the time, but the way this has been implemented on the iPad is somewhat restrictive. When hooked up to OneDrive, if you delete a document, it never disappears. It says that it is deleted but still sits there, and even if you go into OneDrive.com and empty the recycle bin, it still sits there in the Word app. They give no option for printing direct from the iPad. You cannot share a Word doc with any other apps on the iPad. You can choose to open a Word doc using the Word app, but once it is in there it is trapped! I find the interface of OneDrive really limiting compared with how Dropbox works on both a desktop and the iPad.

I was hoping to move away from using Pages on the iPad, to just natively using Word, but Pages is actually far more flexible to allow printing and sharing...

Does it work with documents created with Office 2010? Yeah, I know that's old but I've never found any good reason to spend money on an upgrade.
