3puttssuck: Yep, it appears to be a faulty handset. It is now stuck in recovery mode and I spent an hour with Apple online chat trying to fix it without success. They suggested I return the handset to Vodafone for repair / replacement.

@3puttssuck I'd be insisting on a new replacement rather than repair (and not a refurbished replacement either), was obviously DOA but the kind of fault that just wasn't immediately obvious.

It was supplied to my company by digitalmobile in Auckland. I have to send it back to them and they will send me a brand new one because it was supplied only 26 days ago, so therefore considered DOA. Very happy about that, but a little unhappy with having to wait approx. 2 weeks to get the replacement.

It's the Intel modem.

I had an iPhone 7 Plus, and it was incredibly crappy reception wise. Weak signal everywhere, kept dropping out while on the bus. It got replaced once under AppleCare+, and the replacement was the same.

Meanwhile, wife's iPhone 6 was just fine, as was my iPhone 7 SIM in her phone.

I upgraded to an iPhone X (with a Qualcomm modem), and miraculously my 4G speeds went from 1-2Mbps (that is when I actually got signal), to over 100Mbps, and 3G actually works much more reliably.

I really dislike the Apple approach of persisting with an inferior supplier (like Intel, or LG who made the yellowing delaminating LCD displays) just to keep other suppliers in line.

Seems like NZ carriers are getting the Intel based (non-cdma) modem for the 7/7Plus

It's good that it prevents any supplier having a monopoly, but yeah Intel is kinda bad at making modems. Their new parts in the 8/X are getting a little bit better though.
