I have noticed the same problem over the last few days with my iPhone 7. I agree, it seems to have started since I installed the latest IOS. I'm with a different provider as well.

Edit: I have iMessage on

Of course you will still get charged not all SMS are visible to the end user

You are way off track not all SMS are visible to the end user

When you get a incoming PXT / MMS you get a SMS (you can't see) and this tells the handset to go collect the PXT

Maybe. I reserve the right to not take every comment on the Internet at face value. I will then seek clarification and validation. As the Apple KB article states, "Depending on your carrier, you might be charged for this SMS." Being charged for that SMS is not guaranteed. I certainly was not charged any fee from my carrier, irrespective of invisible / visible SMS's. I have verieid on the statement by my provider.

If they are chargeable, don't you think they should be visible to the user? I can literally hear the outrage of the masses should the be charged for SMS's that they are not aware of.

Having said the above, I'll admit that my tone can be abrasive at times and I will be more aware of that on the enjoyable 15 year old GZ forums.

My emphasis - that's not correct. An SMS is sent, an SMS arrives, there may or may not be a charge depending on your contract with your carrier.

Activating Facetime and/or iMessage on an iPhone sends and receives SMS to +447786205094. This essentially is to authenticate the phone number of the SIM in use so you can send and receive an iMessage from the phone number (as opposed to the Apple ID / email address etc.).

The SMS is sent in the background, and is not visible to the user. It will not show in the messages app, but will show (the outgoing one at least) on your carrier's bill, as long as it itemises each message.

From New Zealand, this is (obviously) an international SMS - you may not be charged for an SMS to the UK on the particular plan with the particular carrier you are with, but that is not the case for quite a number of plans/providers, and the user is billed for an outgoing SMS to the UK number each and every time iMessage and/or Facetime is (re)activated.
