Yes I know that. But when Microsoft introduced HDCP restrictions because of the same companies people were all up in arms and talking how Microsoft is evil, etc.

Two standards?

No. Typically the same people complain about both. If I legally own the content what is the issue? (leading)
I do format transfer to stop my little ones from scratching original discs

Oh really? Then how come Zune marketplace has been offering DRM free music since 2007 (launch) if people wish to buy the albums outright?

Apple only went DRM free few months ago because Amazon music, Zune and few others were offering DRM free music for a while and itune's music sales were dropping.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Apple is a control freak.. The application lock down the iphone is a joke. Cant run two apps at the same time or one in the background. Kills any practical IM client, and make iphone as smart as a brick.

One reason for this is that a lot of users have installed custom profiles to get their tethering going using custom APN's to get around carrier restrictions . If the software update detects one of these then your tethering is disabled. if you uninstall the profile, restore the phone and try again it will work fine using the default carrier settings of your telco.

Might be worth mentioning that the iPhone 3GS can no longer be downgraded. If you need to restore, an attmept to use anything below 3.1 will fail. Yes, this means you'll lose a Jailbreak if you have one and your ability to Tether. Stay well clear of 3.1 unless you have to!

Actually, it can be downgraded with considerable effort - it was the same with the beta 3.1 firmware - and it's not just the 3GS. See here: http://www.blogsdna.com/3911/how-to-downgrade-iphone-3gs-31-to-30-os.htm

Wait what? Apple's original DRM allowed for 5 computers and any number of mobile devices synced to them. Remember when other companies (Plays for sure, cough) first started music stores, most of the stores limited you to 1 device period. Freitasm, seriously, ZUNE marketplace - only apps selected by microsoft; and you whine about Apple's approval process.. Sure, I'd love to see all DRM gone, but let's be realistic... Not that I'm saying apple is innately better than Msoft; they just have more style...

MikeyPI, the main reason for not having background processes is battery life, have a play with a Pre if you want to see what multitasking does to a smartphone's battery. I used to B**ch about my 3G's battery life - till I had a couple of days hanging out with a gf visiting from states; seems like Pre users spend half of their life looking for a power outlet...

I doubt it is the MAIN reason, my blackberry storm with OEM battery, lasts 48hrs, and thats mulit tasking to the fullest, Google talk, 30+ email, txts, 60mins of calling, blackberry browser, Opera mini, Google Maps, Viigo, all running at same time, and all heavy usage.

dont know about the Pre however

You must be extra special, or suffering from user error....

I have also gone through the upgrade to 3.1 and after getting an unknown error in iTunes when syncing I had to do a restore but now all is working and the tethering option is available to me on xt. I have not tested this but I will do and post the result.

I have now tried to "tether" and the option has disappeared. So yes tethering does not work with 3.1 and xt.
