I agree, I think the benefit that the fingerprint scanner will add is speed. You can secure your iphone with a passcode and the reason people don't is speed to unlock their device.

Re security - Apple please make "find my iphone" survive a factory reset. The first thing most criminals do is reset the phone.

Secondly, if when someone tries to get into your phone it emailed there fingerprint which you could give to the Police - THAT would be cool!

jonherries: People have been talking about mobile payments for some time with Apple, esp. around the lack of NFC. I think they might be looking at mobile payments, maybe using the fingerprint as authentication.

I'm really keen on mobile payment technology but the reality is that Apple's implementation would probably involve some proprietry platform that ends up with widespread usage only in the US. When I went to the launch of Snapper's mobile NFC service about a year ago I remember one of the presenters commenting that Apple would probably be awkward to work with if/when they include NFC hardware in the iPhone.

ATM, the only thing they are missing is the ability to conduct a transaction in the "real world".

They have:

accounts with CCs
payment management infrastructure (iTunes)
prototype/internal POS software in Apple stores

It would appear that to do this they would need something for the payee, as they can cover the payer (ie. iphones/ipod touch/ipad).

The payee end could be another ipad or idevice running POS software? Or maybe a dongle of some description which provides transaction value and location for it to be sent to.

This is exactly how it worked when I was in the Apple store in D.C two months ago. Staff just walk around with iPhones and scan your item and card. They email you the receipt. Was too easy.

Wholly crap! That finger print idea is perfect!

The factory reset thing I'm sure is more a privacy issue than a security one. I could imagine people would get angry knowing you could sell an iPhone or give it to someone and then track them.

But dat finger print idea!

In iOS7 the phone can't be reactivated without entering your Apple ID. Also the ID must be entered to turn off find my phone. Strangely nothing was mentioned about entering the ID for a factory reset, meaning that if they overlooked this, there is about to be a lot of iPhones out there which are useless to the thief, but can no longer be found because they've been erased.

There are a lot of apps that deal with POS already, and also bank apps that allows you to pay smaller amounts without a lot of security around it. (So that you can easily pay your pal when you are out on the town, for instance).

I doubt we will see payment systems that are universal in the whole world, although that would be brilliant. I am a stronger believer in a framework that banks can use for their applications, such as a mid level amount you could authenticate with a fingerprint, easier authentication with NFC/Bluetooth 4 etc.

I hope it is an Iphone5s that way the 6 should be a year away and I can justify replacing my now 2 month old Iphohe5.

Hopefully the iPhone6 will have a bigger screen, rather than just longer!

I got offered a choice between an S4 and iPhone5 last week at work (had a 4S already). I took the iPhone, not because I think the phone is better, but because I have other iOS things - AppleTV, iPads and all my music in iTunes.

Also, as a side note, I had to setup everyone's new phones, and the S4, for all it's gruntiness, is not as fluid and smooth as the iPhone - scrolling through pages (eg Facebook) was jerky and stuttery compared to the iPhone (and I wasn't the only one who noticed it).
