I thought the cheapest plan was $80?

Or was he talking about buying it outright and getting one of the normal plans?

That guy was shut down last nite on C live!!! Damn I'm sure he shat his pants somewhere in that interview.

but what is the story with this $50 plan?? anyone know?

I have a suggestion on buying an iPhone.

Fly to Aussie

Go to an Optus shop.

Get their Pre-pay 16GB version for 850AUD

Add 80AUD for unlocking.

You paid 930AUD (1177 NZ) that is NOT TIED with any account crap!!

I know that's what I'm going to be doing (helps having someone travelling to Aussie frequently I suppose).

I've stopped and looked at it.

What I see is an overpriced service, with voice centric plans created by people who mustn't have used an iPhone before.

I have a 200MB plan attached to my 2G iPhone and have to stop myself from using more. Once you add a proper 3G Broadband connection to that the ability to use Youtube or browse graphically intensive sites becomes much easier to do. 250MB is a joke.

They say we can't compare to overseas markets? Perhaps it's a little unfair as we should be used to bending over in NZ for our mobile phone prices.

Rogers Wireless gets a hard time in Canada but they DO have a larger geographic area and less people per KM than NZ to cover. Somehow they manage to offer better plans than Vodafone do here.

It looks like I'll be hanging onto my 16GB 2G iPhone for a while longer. At least until November when (hopefully) Telecom release the iPhone on their new network. The Edge coverage outside 3G areas should make for a more usable service anyway.

Having taken 6 months, half a dozen phone calls to rude CSRs, multiple emails and letters to simply CHANGE MY NAME after getting married at the start of the year I'm absolutely sick of them. These horrendous iPhone plans just don't help matters.

Hopefully things improve later this year.

There is no $50 iphone plan with a subsidy,
What you do is buy it outright, and put it on a $20/month "you choose 20" and add 200MB of data for 29.95/month,

For 24 months... If you're an existing customer and don't want to be locked into a term it's pay full price then $20 a month for a You Choose 20 and $39.95 for 200MB a month.

Its strange that Vodafone in AU can offer at least 3 cheaper plans there than the cheapest plan in New Zealand.
Im not sure if people have released but even if Vodafone released the Iphone on Prepay it would easily cost $1000+ just for the Phone.

edit: the 20% more was on basis that on the lower cap plan the 120 mins and 600 texts would equate to $255 of the $310 cap. So the extra $60 was an extra 23% more.

I looked at the $69 VF Cap Contract plan being pretty much the same as the NZ $80 job but the subsidy being much more in line with what people (namely me) were after i.e. AUD$189 for the 8GB. Plus, there's a lot more plans offering wide variety which has to be better..

The flexibility is good, however they are still cursed by the poor data bundles. Lots of complaints over there too. You can buy a 3G data plan with 5GB and Modem for $30 month yet nowhere near the data on iPhone plans.

I think everyone has forgotten the big difference between New Zealand and other countries we are not that big Australia alone has cities with more people in them than New Zealand's entire population, this will make the plan and phones chaeper due to competition. Sure you may be paying so much money over the course of a contract but you do it on any of Vodafone or Telecom's voice plans. I have it on really good authority that Vodafone is paying over $950 per unit for the 8GB I-Phone and each I-Phone plan Apple gets a cut per month. So yesit may look high but have we taken in the size of the customer base, the cost of the handset and how it compares with Vodafone's other voice plans. To get an I-Phone you do not have to go on an I-Phone plan you can go on a normal voice plan and do it over 36 months if you want and get the same subsidies. It is all about personal choice. Remember also Telecom have not annouced their network or they will get the I-Phone and it may not work out of the major cities, so you can sit and moan and compare and for some hope Telecom will be the saviour but there is no guarantees. We New Zealands size and customer base compared to the rest of the world and also have we compared these plans to what other Vodafone plans there are. We are all jumping up and down but is it not time we were a little more realistic
