Well for a start the media yesterday were advertising it as a cheap iphone. Plus apple have tried to defend 'plastic' in their marketing, and generally when you switch from a premium material like diamond cut anodized aluminum, to a low cost material like plastic, one would presume that it would be a cheaper device to reflect the lower build quality and older technology in it.
mckenndk: They only thing i like is the fingerprint Login option, could do with that on my S3 but won't be changing to apple any time soon.
Also good to note Apple are not the first to do this, Motorola did it on a previous hand set but Google obviously has not thought it a needed feature. laptop wise I have heard of many security holes in fingerprint readers.
Still no NFC.

I don't think Apple will ever do NFC or will wait for it to be fully adopted. Can eftpos terminals that were just rolled out for tap and go cards support NFC? If not that will prove how hard it is to get adoption rates up as retailers only moved to the new eftpos terminals because the old ones would no work at all... Just like the move to digital TV. It needs to be forced on people for it to work.

The iPhone 5C is $549 USD for the non-contract version.
Convert the currency: $680 NZD +/- Add on GST: $782 NZD Add on a bit extra for "extra" hassle and because "they can", and you're looking at around $899 +.

It is also year old technology, which is a big thing, as it potentially decreases it's iOS update life, and apps that will be supported. I learnt this the hard way when I purchased an older gen model it stopped being supported after just 1 year. Even the 4th gen ipod touch which was sold into this year doesn't support ios7. I think $300-$400 would be a better difference in price between the 5c and the 5s, and possibly a $200-$300 difference between the 5 and 5s. Compare it to the price difference between the samsung s3 and s4, which is around that difference. Why else would they go to plastic, which is an inferior product, for it not to be quite a bit cheaper. Supposedly it was supposed to be a device for china, but it will be too expensive for them at that price, especially as it looks like a cheap iphone.
I think the 5c 16gb will be $900. With the 32gb being $1049 the same price as the 5s 16gb (assuming they keep the same pricing as they had with the 5). That is how the AUS and US pricing is (32gb 5c same price as 16gb 5s)
I think it is a bit of a downgrade from a 5 in terms of it's look and build quality, although there are a few minor improvements

Same. This is a 'tock' year as it is a 's' device. Next year is a 'tick' year, so we should see a case change with the iphone 6, which is an opputunity to change the screen size again, and possibly two different screen sizes.

The current Eftpos machines do support the NFC on phones, if google wallet was available in NZ it will work here. The banks and telcos are currently working on a solution for NFC capable phones right now.
I'm more or less "Meh" over the whole announcement.
The reality is that for most customers, high end smartphones (by which I mean android and iOS, not so sure about windows) are essentially much of a muchness. They all offer pretty slick touch OSes, good camera and phone functionality. The market's maturing, and the upgrades are offering much less extra functionality than they did a few years ago. Honestly, does an extra megapixel on the camera really matter that much when the starting point is 8 or 13?
To my mind none of the models, be it 5C, 5S or (say) the Galaxy S4 offer much of a compelling argument to upgrade a working phone of the previous generation.

I think that is correct. This is why I think the apple shares dived, due to the high price of the 5c. Why produce a cheap looking phone from plastic if you aren't selling it in a price range for the market that would buy it. I guess they can always reduce the price in the future, but price dropping is a bit of an admission of a mistake imho.
