freitasm: IF you think you've got all the 1337 hax0r skillz, then go and download the iPhone firmware and try hacking it. Only then come back and show me the money!

Interesting link. Cracking an AES encryped disk image might take a little bit of brute force ;-)

Probably have more luck with hardware debug methods (JTAG) on a running phone.

But raises an interesting point. With the open source hacks available for the ipod, apple tv etc, could there eventually be a open source firmware for the iPhone?

The ARM 11 core has an interesting operating mode (in addition to user and supervisor modes) called TrustZone:

I have my iPhone (AT&T GoPhone, no contract) back in Auckland now. It connects to Vodafone but unable to make or receive calls or use GPRS (roaming is only on contract plans).

Works great with wifi, ironically I have it connected to an adhoc network from my MacBook sharing a Bluetooth UMTS from my regular mobile.

Even without the Phone it's an amazing game changing device.

and the battery is soldered in. I feel a lawsuit coming on, just like the ipod. Apple certainly doesn't like ease of changing the battery. Battery life is 8 days, quite good but even so, why oh why is it necessary to take it to a technician to change the battery?

The phone weighs about 150 grams, way too much to put in a shirt pocket (in my experience, 80 grams or less is preferable) but it probably doesn't have a vibrate function anyway.

I think that the iPhone is the 'Paris Hilton of cellphones'. Nice looking, highly valuable but not practical in normal use.

It does have a vibrating alert... It is one of the so called "innovative features" by Apple.

I think the battery being non user replaceable is a non issue for most people.

From the people i've asked, the only reason they've ever removed a battery from a phone, is to get access to the SIM card.

That's where one of the innovative features, the proximity sensor, which powers down the display when the phone is by your ear helps. Combined with the impressive industry leading low power embedded components, and despite the relatively demanding graphic interface transitions, from an engineers perspective, the battery life is actually very impressive.

I got a desktop charger for the nokia bl-5c's that my phones use specifically so I can carry a spare in the car to swap it when its dead. And I have had 2 genuine nokia ones fail, strangely enough the $6 on trademe ones have outlasted the real deal.

Look at how many people chuck out their old ipods because the battery is dead or else just use it as a portable hdd when its died. Phones get a totally different usage pattern to music and movie players, and if its flat from a days music and I need to go out that evening you can bet that I would be annoyed to not be able to pop a spare battery into it.

Yip, but i'm just saying that in my experience that's not the norm for most people. Most people don't have spare batteries to swapout in their cell phones... most people don't really care if they have access to the battery or not.

And the iPhone doesn't quite support the Web 2.0 we all know. Forcing developers to code around the standards is not a good move.

but isn't that what web developers have been doing since Microsoft released Internet Explorer?

it would be nice if standards were adhered to but that just doesn't seem to happen, in Redmond or Cupertino.

I agree. But one thing is to code for a browser with 33% market share (Firefox) or about 60% (IE) (source). Safari hits 1.5% only...
