But I'm going to work out an alternative way to get one. I can actually afford to pay the ridiculous price of $979 but won't lock myself into paying even $50/month for 2 years.

I also want the option to switch away from VF when I like. Maybe telecom will bring out a good GPS option?

$1300 on trademe for a prepay 3g. Ofcourse, it doesnt work on 3g, gprs, gps or mms. So really, your getting a 1g iphone for twice the price. Will be interesting to see what telecom does wheneve they get to it.

Yeah, I have no idea why Vodafone is locking the phone down to only work On Account (well I see that they are just greedy). I have an iPhone 2.5G now and it works fine on GPRS on prepay and I've also had Sony Ericssons that work on 3G on prepay.... so you would think that the iPhone 3G would also work fine on 3G on Prepay.

It's just Vodafone trying to make as much money and lock as many people down before people have the option to move to Telecom. GSM phones are all about the ease of popping out your SIM card and using what provider you want. Locking down phones is just incredibly anti competitive.
