DarthKermit: Is it correct that these phones cost US$8 to make over in China?

That might be the labour cost per unit, but definitely not the materials cost.

Looks like the entry-level model (16GB) component cost alone is $199 USD, as seen at MacRumors.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Pre-orders for outright purchases?

Got a dispatch notification! For my USB-Lightning cable :( Phone is still sat at 3-4 weeks, I am very glad I didn't sell my iPhone 4 a few weeks ago, I assumed I'd have had an iPhone 5 by now and it would have been a real pain without one (I use mine a lot for monitoring our servers/email at work).

Yep, and they were $20 cheaper than apple for the 16gb i think.  Just wanted a 10% deposit to secure.

Mine still says 3-4 weeks. What makes it worse though...my wife just brought home the iPhone 5 that her work gave her. We knew this was a possibility though, so I had a chance to mentally prepare myself. Sigh...

She's a prepaid customer, but they were able to buy them outright as a large corporate customer.

At work (Highbrook/East Tamaki) using 3G on my iPhone 5 I get the following results. I'm guessing that not all Vodafone cell sites are dual carrier HSPA enabled. Nice how Pukekohe is though :)

Test Date: Oct 9, 2012 9:53 AM
Connection Type: Cellular
Server: Auckland
Download: 3.83 Mbps
Upload: 0.35 Mbps
Ping: 36 ms

External IP: 49.227.91.204
Internal IP: 49.227.91.204

Longitude: 174.8806

You can see the coverage here:

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/speedy-network/

patchy on some areas but a decent start. Will see how Telecom does

Pukekohe is not on those maps but is DC HSPA enabled. They should release a full NZ map.

What they SHOULD do is release coverage maps that overlay Google Maps like Chorus do. Those low-res images are awful.

Anyone from the Vodafone team able to give me raw data that I could then overlay onto Google Maps for everyone to use? Could be a handy service if it doesn't already exist. I know there's the Cell Site location map but would be cool to integrate this with actual coverage etc

Could this be a sign that Vodafone will soon be selling outright?

https://www.vodafone.co.nz/iphone5/buy/

You can now purchase on a Smart plan (not just Smart Data), including terms of only 1 month.

So if you go on the cheapest Smart plan ($45 monthly), you can just buy the phone for its normal retail value and then cancel the plan shortly thereafter.

Am currently on hold to their online sales team to confirm this.
