NZtechfreak: I can't really see Apple producing a cheaper iPhone, that isn't really in their DNA and doesn't fit with their brand image. I think they'll just make the older iPhones the second tier, much like they have done with the iPad2.

They did with the ipad mini though, but that was solely a defensive move IMO. Even though it has ended up being a preferred device by many over the ipad. They already do produce a cheaper iphone in a way, as they retain the old models at a cheaper price. But I can see a market for a smaller form factor iphone and a larger form factor one.

They also need to stop making statements about what form factor the consumer wants... They keep having to eat their words. The iPad mini is a classic example.

I think to be honest, what is fuelling my lack of enthusiasm is little more than the old "grass is greener" point of view. New things are shiny, big, exciting and unknown.

If I really stop and think about it, what I am most wanting is change. Not necessarily a change of philosophy or a change of brand...just change.

I have gone from a WOW new iPhone in the iPhone 4 (it really was a big leap from the 3GS), to a HMMMM same phone experience in my 4S (You can't really tell my wife's 4 from my 4S) and have been stuck there for around 2.5 years.

What do I want next?

Something different...but something that still integrates seamlessly with my iEnvironment...

I think that summarises really nicely the difference between those that are happy with the iOS UI and those that aren't.

Me, I want to have easy access to my apps as that is all I am interested in, my apps. Thus, I like the clean interface which is essentially my listing of apps. Others who find it boring and unchanged, want the enjoyment of something new, and the daily interaction with the homescreen. In fact iOS has no homescreen, its homesceen is just the first screen of apps.

My ideal is keep iOS as it is, boring, but hav 2 or 3 alternative screens, say a swipe up, which are customisable. Seems an easy solution to keep all happy. Just my thoughts (copyright Tony!)

i don't think it's that so much as there is a mature market of tablet specific apps on iOS whereas (from what I read/hear) the tablet apps on Android aren't much more than scaled phone apps (generalisation of course, I'm sure there are tablet specific apps, but nowhere near the quantity of iOS).

That's been my general experience: the Android market has more rubbish apps than the istore, due often to the apps not knowing what hardware they're going to actually get, whereas all i software knows the hardware it will be playing with. Manufacturers that supply both hardware and software have always got a compatibility head start for sure.

The 'limiting' / 'controlling' nature of apple can often have benefits by weeding out the really crap stuff, so it's not even available for their devices. Lends to more happier customers in that respect than Android.

that's also my general understanding and the reason i have never considered owning another Android tablet (I had a cheapy some time ago before I got my first iPad).

That was definitely the case up until relatively recently but as the OS has matured with Ice Cream Sandwich onwards a significant number of tablet apps are pretty good, certainly not blown up phone apps.

Yeah. There was and still is damage being done to the Android image with rubbish (which i bought in the past too) on the market.

You still need to stump up some $ to get something that is reasonable quality in the hardware stakes.

The reality is that my Android tablet and an iPad could be interchangeable for what I use mine for (reading PDF manuals and internet surfing) but my Android phone with it's widgets and interactive home screen makes access to information an eye glance away.

I don't think the homescreen UI at all accounts for the differences between iOS and Android for those that are unhappy with iOS.

It goes quite a lot deeper than that.

The Android notifications systems is vastly better than the iOS one, and this is an important UI aspect that has a bearing on daily use of the device. The system-wide share intents in Android are also a significant positive in daily use with no real alternative available in iOS. The UI differentiation between Android and iOS goes a lot deeper than the homescreen. Previously I think iOS users could forgive the OS for some of the shortcomings since the UI was smoother on iOS, but that context has changed on new Androids on ICS OS versions on up (and particularly Jelly Bean), so the deficiencies become harder to ignore.

I agree. I just noticed comments on this thread that often referred or implied of the importance some have of the interactrivity of Androids homescreen. I'd like to think that some of these ommisions such as shares, notifications and others are included is iOS interations before long, based that SJ is not here.
