Benjip: Could this be a sign that Vodafone will soon be selling outright?

https://www.vodafone.co.nz/iphone5/buy/

You can now purchase on a Smart plan (not just Smart Data), including terms of only 1 month.

So if you go on the cheapest Smart plan ($45 monthly), you can just buy the phone for its normal retail value and then cancel the plan shortly thereafter.

Am currently on hold to their online sales team to confirm this.

Let us know!

Hmmmnn, the guy at the call centre didn't believe me, even after I told him to refresh the page.

This is super promising. Maybe I can go into a Vodafone Store this afternoon and try it on!

the delivery time is still 14 to 21 days though, by that time apple will probably have shipped their orders :(

"iPhone 5 is available with our Smart Data plans and we have special offers available until Midnight on 22 October."

So I'd assume they should be selling outright after 22nd Oct.

Bugger. Wonder if that's just a temporary thing while they distribute the new info to the stores?

Here's the screenshot btw for those who aren't seeing the new Smart Plans on the 'buy iPhone 5' page.

from telecoms and vodas point of view it makes sense what they're doing as they probably know the outright phones from apple wont be arriving till later this month, thus you either pay the premium to get one now either on trademe, or you sell your soul to them for two years :( smart yet very aggravating.

Only 32GB, want 64 :(

Was looking online for Vodafone shops in Hamilton to ring, are there no Vodafones here anymore?

Me too. Especially since they're in the wild now (I've seen plenty in person). So close yet so far!

I don't see how Vodafone will have different terms of sale on their website versus their stores?

It's a nice phone certainly - although if you have a 4S I probably wouldn't rush. I had a 4 and it is quite a different beast from that, but I gather that the 4S was much closer to this in terms of performance - and with IOS 6 on a 4S I think you'd have 90% of the 5 right there.

I'm wishing that the edges of the frame were knurled for grip though.

Sitting on the 4 now. I don't want to sign up for a new plan because a) they're so expensive for what you get and b) I have the old Smart1 plan with 3gb. I'm a hungry data user and see myself using way more anyway with DC-HSPA.
