Agree fully, hardware is mature, new models are incremental. Any phone.With the board telling Tim Cook they want innovation, next year will be the year, of the 4.7 and innovation I predict

So, you are implying the iphone 5s will allow apple to reverse their decline in market share. I don't think so.

And, as for your 'insert phone' comment -- that is because apple truly changed the phone market and the rest pretty much copied. Apple are the only ones who truly innovated and they created the entire smartphone market. Remember the crappy old nokias most people would use?

I don't think you can apply your formula ---"2007 Nokia" + gimmicks = iphone.

Waiting to see if we are likely to get an updated Ipad or Ipad mini this time around.

Just waiting to see if Ipad Mini will get better resolution screen this time around, also if the Ipad4 will be discounted and sold as "refurbished" like the Ipad3 was.

iPhone5S doesn't concern me as I upgraded recently to a 5.

Apple TV could be a go, but only because I am looking for one anyway, not because I expect better features.

iWatch - Not at all interested, I don't wear a watch now, and don't think I will again.

I think the 4 and 4s will be pulled and replaced with 5C, 5 and 5S.

Gets rid of the 30 pin and keeps a low, medium, high type arrangement.

I am interested in what happens to the apple tv, maybe a SDK?

What do you feel would be innovatve that would make this discussion positive?

Can't be better CPU, GPU, camera as these are what always happens with phones. Can't be larger screen as that's not innovative now, its a catchup and will be next year. I feel you can make the same points about the other big brands. To me the OS is the main issue now, and iOS is moving somewhat tomorrow

I cannot see what any phone manufacturer can do to make a modern smartphone innovative, hardware wise. Samsungs air gestures are cool but not that great I hear, and not that reliable. Maybe Apple can do that right and make it highly useful and where users will commonly want to use it for efficiency.

Sum of the hardware quality, hardare features (useful not gimmicky), OS features (useful not gimmicky) is where it seems to be going. Just my 2c

Nope - I dont give a rats arse about market share - i dont care how many phones Apple sells compared to HTC or Nokia or Samsung - all I am interested in is what their hardware and software can do for me.

The bottom line is most of the innovation is happening around the software side - the hardware side is just getting incrementally faster with bigger/better batteries and everything else is mostly a gimmick.

I think you misunderstood my point - I am not saying an old phone +gimmicks= an iphone? not sure where you got that, I am saying that all manufacturers in the past 2 years have pretty much just come out with slightly faster or slightly bigger or slightly lighter or whatever you like - version of their phones and to expect apple to come out with something revolutionary (like the ipad, like the iphone 1 or maybe even iphone 4) is unrealistic.

Be happy that something you pay $1,000 for in a few weeks is 31% faster and has a bit more battery life than a similar phone would have cost you today.

I think that this year has seen a flattening of innovation, maybe because its been going so fast, hopefully next year we can see some new techie stuff to hit the shelves but this year is a dead duck.

I actually hope Apple come out with a blinder as it raises the bar for all including us android fanboys so win win.

I'm too tied into Android now to change even if I wanted to so understand why most wouldn't want to change.

anyway fingers crossed for a great release.

Back in the days when nokia rules, people were saying the same. How on earth can you make a phone better than it already is? Then, apple showed how.

There are a lot of people above my pay grade to figure out how to make a better mousetrap/phone etc...But, none with the visionary ability of Steve Jobs as yet.

Revolutionary technology changes often seem intuitive after the fact.

I'm just saying, apple are going to continue to lose market share unless they can begin truly innovating again.

I hear you. The old saying was "its already been invented" But I do think hardware featues have reached a plateau, although clearly that will change when some cool, useful next big think pops up. I feel that air gestures done right and marketed right could be a next small big thing. Board told TC to innovate, to me thats the call for Apple 2014. Hardware gets a bump, iOS gets a bigger bump than iOS7, and integration is made big, and at that its already very good. Apple 2014 is my pick, we may see some unexpected things tomorrow as a starter for 10. Maybe not, maybe what we expect, but probably a clear indication from Apple that the push is on.

I am the same - but on the Apple front...I look forward to a new Android launch - excited by what may ceom, yet tied into teh Apple ecosystem an dunable to take part other than as an observer.
It's nice that there are Android users that feel the same way in teh other direction.

I have to say I am bubbling with anticipation at the idea we may see something NEW tomorrow.

In saying that, I won't be leaping into a new iPhone either...my 5 is pretty new and I'd soon be divorced if I came home with a new iPhone...

When you look at Apple's history they've tended to achieve great publicity and explosive sales upon creating a whole new product segment, but over a few years that product segment eventually plateaus. The iPhone will continue to evolve, but I don't believe we'll ever see a revolutionary update.

You geeks are going to hate me for saying this, but I think the iWatch idea has real potential. A huge part of the iPhone's user base consists of trendy young women who wouldn't have a clue what sort of CPU it has or what iOS version they're running, but they love the brand recognition and aesthetics of the iPhone. Another tech fashion accessory could be very marketable to that demographic if they get it right.

In terms of innovation and IMO, iOS (and it's end goal) was the driver of the iPhone concept and hardware was secondary (but became increasingly important as the phone evolved around Apple and their customers). The concept of iOS was the driver hence each and every iPhone since the original (in terms of hardware) has been incremental. It's software that has been the most exciting.

Anyway, I was disappointed to learn that there is a high chance we wont see a new Apple TV, only a software upgrade. Having said that - to achieve what I want them to do, a hardware upgrade is not necessary (Apple TV store etc).
