I'd hold off on that happy thought until we see first what features VF would disable or cripple. Hmm... VF Live + iPhone = ?

On the review front, one of the Apple-haters from THG's Gear Digest site reviewed the device and lurved it!

This is exactly why I think that we'll never see Vodafone offering the iPhone. Vodafone like to assume a lot of control over handset functionality and that doesn't fit in with the way that Apple are managing their relationship with AT&T.

That's what they said about the iPod and you can do it yourself (if you know what you're doing). Hate to think what that does for the warranty though.

On the warranty for the AT&T users...
- One year warranty (although locked into contract for 2 years)
- Extendable to 2 years if you purchase AppleCare (extra US$70)
- 14 day return with 10% restock fee (apparently it takes 30 days to cancel the data plan)

As for battery life and longevity, I guess time will tell how accurate that is. However from an engineering perspective, the ic's used in the phone are world leading in their power consumption, the arm 11 core, the wifi bluetooth chipset etc, and the battery is a lot larger than many phones, so from that perspective I can't see battery life being too much of an issue, especially relative to other phones.

If the user can't remove it then it's not removable FWIW.

As for battery life, do you know batteries work? When the reviewer says "300 - 400 full charges" he means that. Every time you come home and plug a device to recharge you are shortening the battery life a bit. All batteries have a limit on how many times they can be recharged - and 300 - 400 full recharges is not that much, for a mobile phone.

Lithium Ion Batteries have a realistic 24month maximum life, from the point that the base materials are combined to make the battery there is approximately a 24month time frame before the chemical status has deteriated to the point that a unusable charge containment is met. This is the basic chemistry of Lithium Ion, it can not be improved by any particular charging routine.

Around this time your contract with AT&T is up and they will be looking at flogging you a new phone, once you see the price of a new battery (installed by you or a service centre) you will realise that a new phone is what you need, and then you realised that you are trapped by the cellphone cycle.

Bring back the Motorola Brick I say!

I like the bit where they find out Safari is not Safari, but Mobile Safari. Like Internet Explorer Mobile, Opera Mobile, Mozilla Minimo and others. I wonder if, like those other "mobile" versions, the Mobile Safari is crippled in some way.

Hehe... Safari Mobile and its parent, Mac OS X Mobile...

I still think the Safari mobile browser in iPhone is server-render-image-based browser like MS Deepfish.

And DVD Jon just cracked the code again!

The guy who cracked the DVD's copy protection when he was 15 years old now did it again. He cracked the protection in the iPhone in just 5 days and his sw is available on his website for free to download.

DVD-Jon cracked the iTunes-only activation, not the SIM/Network lock "protection". Different things here. It was cracked by others before DVD-Jon anyway, he just released the first Windows app people could download to do it with.

I'm with cyril, bring back the Motorola brick and AMPS. And theres a GSM model of the brick, that would beat up any iPhone.
