In October the Vodafone CEO said "not until next year" on twitter  RE e-sim support.

I discovered that on this thread over on the vodefone nz website.

If they can't see the financial gain they won't do it or they'll drag their feet about it.

If things have changed since October, and it is arriving before xmas, then that would be just in time for the tourist season which is telling in where they see the revenue advantages of offering e-sim support.

If I'm travelling then I'm going to keep my primary number as the psychical SIM and use the e-sim for carrier hoping because it's a pain popping out that esim tray especially if you have a good cover on it.

https://www.spark.co.nz/shop/apple-shop/watch/apple-watch-series-5-cellular

“Share your mobile number with your Apple Watch with One Number from Spark. Make calls and texts straight from your watch without your phone nearby – stay connected wherever you are.

For just $12.99 a month, the One Number Wearable Plan lets you share your primary plan’s minutes and texts and get unlimited data* on the watch. So you never have to worry about running out. Plus, sign up before 6 June 2020 and you’ll get the first three months of your plan on us.

Available from 6 December“

Pricing isn’t the worst but I don’t think I’d pay that much myself considering how few calls I make on it and how little mobile data the thing would use. It has a limit of 40GB before throttling, would love to see how that thing can use that much. Maybe with podcast and Apple Music streaming?

Very much wish I’d waited; my use cases would have made the cellular very much my preferred option...and I’m on Spark too.

A watch paired with some airpods for calls sounds to me like the perfect solution for disconnecting from my phones screen.

I'm going to do a carrier swap to get this going. Are there still issues surrounding porting and activating iMessage/Facetime anymore or have they sorted that mess?

There should be no issues with this at all as long as your number stays the same.

The verbiage surrounding when this actually launches needs to be clarified. Apparently it's actually the 13th at 8am but the webpage states "Available from 6 December". Is it just the One Number plan launching on the 6th? Also will the One Number plan be available to Spark Digital customers?

Reckon SPARK / Apple will also support Series 4 GPS + Cellular version (bought in AU) over here in NZ to also be enabled for cellular access to SPARK, or will SPARK limit access to only versions 3 & 5 that Apple will officially have for sale in NZ soon?

There’s no reason it won’t work with previous gen cellular watches as long as the modems in them support the right bands.

The FAQ on the Spark website says they will support watches purchased overseas as long as they support the correct LTE bands.

And yes, Spark Digital will support this from what I have heard.

Should be no issues. Often there are though where the overseas sms aggregators don't update your carrier quick enough after a port, so your iMessage/FaceTime activation texts go to your old carrier and disappear. Eventually their tables update and they go to the right place. Sometimes within minutes, sometimes days.
