Agree the prices for the premium models are ridiculous. I'm lucky that work buys these things.

They have also removed the cheap SE option, which was under the $500 dollar band. So the cheapest now is over $800. Also people who want a smaller form factor phone are out of luck. I wonder if they will bring out a new r SE based on iphone 5 design with the notch, although that would perhaps eat into sales of other models

The XS Max will undoubtedly sell well to lovers of large screens, but I can't see the standard XS having good numbers at all as it offers almost nothing over last years model - yet is still eye-wateringly expensive.

I can certainly see the XR being a very big seller. Bigger screen than XS and most of the features for less money.

I am guessing it is a marketing thing, where the XS is in the lineup to compare against, but they would probably know it won't be a big seller. The XR compares well against it, as people can see they can get a similar phone to the XS, for many hundreds of dollars cheaper. If they made the notch smaller on these pro models, that would have been a big improvement, and would have created a bigger point of difference. Even promotion on the iphone XS/max would have been better. I think the big standout this year was the watch, a big improvement with all new tech and scree, and the cardiogram. The new ipad pro also should be good, based on all the leaks.

Apple have, with a very careful slight of hand, upped the price of the overall current generation of their phones -sure the X/Xs has remained the same but everything else has risen....

Posit: last year the X sold for $999 and the 8/+ was $699/$799 (all USD pricing)

Now we have the Xs at $999, while the Xr has been bumped up to $749, and the plus has been eliminated so the "big phone option" is now $1099

The accountants must be loving it....

But maybe that is the exchange rate, as the NZ dollar has dropped a lot. But I ahve also found prices of other household appliances, (excl tvs) such as fridges, cookers etc, have also gone up.

The NZ dollar prices have been pushed around by the NZD, so that's why I looked at the USD pricing, which are definitely rising

Price is largely based on what people are prepared to pay. If it got to the stage where sales drop, then I suspect pricing maybe looked at. Many people will also be buying on contract, so may not be paying a big lump sum upfront.

its a combination of both the ex rate and Apple pushing the boat out, but its mainly apple upping prices.

On launch in 2014 the 6 plus 128Gb ( top end) was $949 in the US , the Xs Max 512GB is $1449 so that's a ~60% jump

in 2014 when the 6 was launch then NZD was north of 80 cents US , compared to 65 today and that's a 20% per cent fall.,

I have dipped in and out of the news today and I have to say the Xr looks like the option to me. Price-wise it is placed at about the point of most top-end phones so hardly the cheap option! The Xs' blow that away but don't exactly offer $500 more (price diff between the Xr and Xs entry models) so I personally think they examples of money being thrown away.

The main things I see myself losing out on if I was to get an Xr is 3D Touch and screen resolution. My current phone doesn't have 3D Touch but my work phone does and I never use it. Screen resolution is not a thing I care about much TBH and won't be worse than my current phone, would be nice but not a must have.

Such a shame that NZ carriers still haven't got their act together and started to support the eSim required for cellular - I was really hoping that would be a feature of todays keynote. Tempted to wait until the next time I'm in Aussie and get a cellular model there, but no guarantees that it'd even ever work here.

100% agree. I’m surprised and disappointed the telcos haven’t done anything. Feels like if one did it they all would. Frustrating.

Can anyone clarify the ECG functionality of the series 4 watch? In The keynote, they seemed to infer that it would be available first in the US and then in other markets. Will it be a software patch? Will it be available on both the gps and the LTE models?

If you look at some of the demo models of reviewers, the XR / LCD model does appear to have noticeably thicker bezels. It also looks like quite a thick phone as well. It does look quite meaty.
