Yabanize: Chances are that will change this year to USB-C. Apple have just been holding off because they didn't want to piss everyone off again so soon after changing to Lightning in 2012. I think a common misconception is that Lightning is just a money maker for Apple, they made that connector because they needed something smaller nothing else at the time was good enough. Micro USB at the time couldn't provide enough power to charge an iPad, and just wasn't a very good connector.

My macbook pro from early 2012 has USB-2, TB1, FW-800, wired-ethernet and magsafe (not to mention a SD Card reader and optical drive). They upgraded to USB-3 and TB-2 that same year and none of those interfaces are compatible with current Apple notebooks, so I'm a little bit sceptical when you say they are holding off on replacing Lightning because don't want to piss off customers.

I noticed that the new 2019 iPad mini didn't get USB-C.

Does this mean Lightning for the peasants and USB-C for notebooks and the iOS pro range?

No it means Apple does not need to supply drivers or allow 3rd parties to supply drivers for IOS if they use lightening, where as USB would be a huge mess with thousands of "Apple fail" videos because their devices do not work on a USB equiped IOS device, eg USB-> ethernet, USB Printer drivers, USB Scanners...etc etc etc.

I am guessing it is also the usb-c is also considered a pro feature, such as connecting the device to a monitor etc. I suspect the new top teir iphones may get it this year, but the more budget ones such as the XR2 etc won't get it. They are also going to have to provide USB-C earphones with the new iphones too if they go down that route.

USB/USB-C is a pig, especially when you start looking at the fact than USB-C has been used for USB2 devices, USB 3 devices and USB 3.1 devices.

Of course Apple also uses the USB-C for Thunderbolt 3

USB 4 should fix a lot of these issues.

But I think the "pro feature" is not the concern, its drivers , compatibility, user experience all the way.

I thought that part of the reason for moving away from lightning connectors. Is due to them being both small enough and long enough, to be inserted into mains power sockets. AFAIK there has been at least 1 death due to that. The name “lightning” is also quite unfortunate in relation to the above also.

I would have thought most countries would be using shuttered power outlets

Why would it be considered "Apple fail" for the iPad mini, but not for the iPad Pro which supports USB-C charging and connections?

I stand corrected.

Thanks for that info.
