Yeah, it's just one model. It's actually a pentaband chipset (800/850/900/1900/2100) but Apple isn't promoting 800 (it might even be disabled).

Great, so now when someone asks again the question - what phone works on Telecom & Vodafone, we can now say the Apple iPhone 4.

Yep the inevitable comparisons between the two networks that will follow iPhone 4's release will be interesting.

Apparently it actually have 5 bands. The apple site is missing one. Edit: what the guy above said.

damn, makes it the second phone in the world to have it, so it's a bit more exclusive :)

Definitely!!! would love pentaband in some 3G expresscards and PCIe cards :)

Surprised by that from Apple, but most likely just to open up more market share! Smart as always. Nice looking phone too. True smartphone contender in just about all categories.

Apple appear to have decided CDMA is dead...and for most of the world outside the US, it is - or soon will be.

Covering 850/900/1900/2100 is a good move. It may have the consequence of forcing telcos to lock their phones.....the phone is utterly biddable. Telcos can't be happy about that. Once one locks, likely they all will. It's the reverse of competition.....circling the wagons. Like when one oil company puts up their prices...so do the others and not always driven by cost. They all make more money.

We may see Telecom XT and Vodafone locking their iPhones.

Sorry to be the party-pooper but I am not all that excited about the new iPhone.

Currently owning the iPhone 3GS, the better main camera, front facing camera and multi-tasking abilities on the new iPhone don't really seem it's worth upgrading to. Sure, if you don't have an iPhone at present, it's a great device but not sure if you come from a 3GS.

The front-facing camera is useful but only to a small segment of the market. The world quickly found out that people don't enjoy 3G video calls as much as technology world expected.

Bingo - i've had video calling available to me for a little over a year and only ever used it twice - both in the first week of having it.

iPhone 4 is a bit like 802.11N, if you're buying a new router get one with it but if you've already got G there's no point upgrading it.

You're forgetting the higher resolution screen and quadband HSPA.

Yeah have to agree with this. Apple were marketing it like it was some amazing ground-breaking never-before-seen new feature, but when my wife and I had video calling phones a couple years ago we hardly ever used it.

Admittedly that's just my situation, but it's a feature you certainly don't see Telecom or Vodafone marketing too much.

Will be interesting though, she's a longhaul flight attendant so it might have its use for us when she's away from home for a while.

I can back you up on the video calls. I got my wife and two kids 3G video phones...and it is the one feature they REFUSE to use. They aren't just indifferent. They don't like it.

So when I bought my smartphone, video calling wasn't a factor. I wanted the power of the iPhone and the freedom of open source and linux...so I got a Google Nexus One android phone.

iPhone 4 comes close....iPhone OS is a version of unix....but the Walled Garden is still the Walled Garden, so no Adobe Flash and you can't swap in a spare battery if you need too, either. No removable sdcards.

Three show stoppers for me. On my Nexus One, I have Adobe Flash and I can swap batteries and sdcards if needed.

But for these three issues I'd probably be a happy iPhone owner right now.

Bit disappointing on most things tbh, the screen looks gorgeous, but no MicroSD....no changeable battery, only a 5MP camera, 720P recording, multitasking...my Galaxy lite for $390 does more than it and is running Android 2.1

Hmmm...does your Galaxy do 720p video recording, has 960x640 res screen, front camera and native video chat app, buy media contents online easily, 850/900 HSUPA(not just HSDPA) support that works on XT and Voda networks, wifi-n, gyro and proximity sensors, 3D graphics hardware, regular future OS updates?

Sorry, Apple has raised the bar again. The only real competitors are the high-end HTC Android devices. Even some Android devices recently, i.e. X10, Spica, anything from Nokia, are outdated already.

Really? My kids really loved using the video calling back when I had a compatible device... they often ask why I can't do it at the moment.

Not sure it's a show-stopper but it was very cool when I started working in the office and not from home so much. I missed out on stuff and they could video call me to tell me all about it.

Of course, these days they're far too busy to bother telling Dad much of anything but still... I quite enjoyed it and I'd be happy to use it again.

Well, let's just say it's not a phone that I will want to run out and get one from day 1. Perhaps when my 3GS dies:P

Still, a little disappointed that Apple hasn't come up with something to make us go "wow, now that's clever", like they usually do.

The eyes can only see so much detail on a small screen. And the Quadband? Good for travellers but not a huge factor for your average Joe just wanting to use a phone.

Hmmm...does your Galaxy do 720p video recording - no point, why would I want too? I'm not a teenage girl

has 960x640 res screen - also no point, rather the i9000 Galaxy screen with better contrast, over something even apple have said the eye can't see...

front camera and native video chat app - i can use the rear camera and have it work over 3g or Wifi I'm not stuck with a camera app that only works over wifi like the 4G

buy media contents online easily - yes, its called Android Marketplace, otherwise any free MP3 site and a lot of the apps are free....unlike the walled garden that is iTunes

850/900 HSUPA(not just HSDPA) support that works on XT and Voda networks - not fussed? I don't want
to be swapping sims everytime i want to use the net or call someone, happy with 3 bands

wifi-n - not fussed, why would I need it? phone apps are tiny, i have wireless N on my laptop

gyro and proximity sensors - Yes, most phones these days have them, have a few apps which use them too, a couple of compasses, metal detector, games

3D graphics hardware - Yes, onboard OpenGL2 hardware decoding, again most android phones have them, nothing special about the iPhone

regular future OS updates - Yes, I have the official Samsung 2.1 upgrade, can always get a hacked 2.2 in the future

All that for only $1200? my phone was $390. I could get an Incredible for $950 or an upcoming Galaxy for $850 which both are more powerful and upgradable than the iPhone 4, but why would I need all that? I just want:
- A few games
- To check emails
- To occasionally watch trademe listings
- To be able to make phone calls with the occassional skype/video call
