There should be no issues with this at all as long as your number stays the same.

Should be no issues. Often there are though where the overseas sms aggregators don't update your carrier quick enough after a port, so your iMessage/FaceTime activation texts go to your old carrier and disappear. Eventually their tables update and they go to the right place. Sometimes within minutes, sometimes days.

I have ported about 100 connections and never had an issue.

Interesting. Most of mine have been Voda or 2d —> Spark, seperate connections when onboarding staff. Ports undertaken by Spark Digital.

I understand even though the Apple Watch will work without your cellphone nearby (and will have the same phone number as your cellphone), the cellphone needs to be switched on and in reach of the cellular network. Is that true? Anyone know the technical reason? (disclaimer: I work in IT)

To confirm, (I think) this means you cannot have just the Apple Watch, you must have an iPhone as well, even though you don't have to carry it with you. What's more, it looks like you have to have that phone "on" (even if it's at home). Is that right?

That’s an interesting question nichts. You *do* need an iPhone because the eSim in the watch relies on being populated/configured from the iPhone watch app - it’s a simple sim to eSim copying process (by this I am referring specifically to the cellular capability, not the apps and settings). Also the iPhone is the ‘master’ for the cellular plan (not sure of the right term here).

i rang my sister to ask her to test if the iPhone needs to be switched on - ironically her phone is turned off! Will post when she gets back to me.

long story short, you need the iPhone switched on to use the cellular functionality, even if the phone is somewhere else.

The link you provided states the opposite. You can use your cellular Apple Watch if your iPhone is off

"When your iPhone is off or out of range, your Apple Watch can use a Wi-Fi network to send and receive data. And if your watch is equipped with cellular, it can connect to a cellular network"

The footnotes are as follows:

1. To receive SMS, MMS, or push notifications from third-party apps on your cellular Apple Watch, your paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular, but it doesn't need to be nearby. You also need to be signed in to iMessage on your iPhone.

2. If you're on Wi-Fi and want to call a phone number, make sure that Wi-Fi calling is turned on for your Apple Watch. Otherwise, try making a FaceTime audio call.

So, to make phone calls on a cellular watch the phone does not need to be turned on. You should also be able to receive iMessages but not SMS or MMS.

it makes sense to me. To allow for stand-alone cellular use the watch would need a separate number/plan and therefore a full implementation as per any phone. I’m assuming the thinking is that the potential user-base is too small to make it worthwhile.

also battery size etc may make a stand-alone watch aka Dick Tracey phone unpalatable to most.

The Apple Watch with cellular will work without your phone being anywhere near you. It does have a full cellular modem built-in and it was a design decision that the watch shared your number from your phone (nobody wants two numbers to remember, they just want to receive/send messages on it).

The reason why your phone needs to be on *somewhere* (it could be 1000s of km away) is that in order to receive SMS or MMS Apple is relying on the SMS forwarding feature to forward those to your watch. iMessage is native to the watch and using the mobile data network directly on the watch.

So in summary, you can be without your phone, make and receive calls, iMessage and many other services.
