To be honest the Ultra is probably overkill for any of that. The series 8 would be more than adequate, especially when you consider the additional running metrics in WatchOS 9.

My main gripe with my series 6 is that it's fiddly to start an activity and water lock the display as I cross the start line at an event. I assume the additional button on the Ultra could help with that.

Talking about these iWatch's in general, how water proof are they? I do hydro pool lap walking and some swimming. I also do aqua-aerobics. Are they sealed enough for these activities?

I would be interested in knowing if they get water damaged, whether they are covered by warranty and CGA. I have one that you are supposed to be able to swim with, and you turn the dial to get rid of water in the speakers, but I have never gotten it wet.

^^ There was brief mention in the event this morning of the Watch Ultra ‘drying itself’ after being in water. A one-second clip seemed to show water being expelled or blown out of the speaker grille.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

There’s no mention in the CGA of the Apple Watch being excluded.

That has however been a feature since the second or third gen model. You turn the dial a few times to activate it and it makes a loud beeping sound. .

While they are rated as being water resistant, they have always had * next to the descriptor and the footnote on the * is always a get out of jail statement.

Basically, they are water resistant and that's great, but don't try to claim for water damage on the warranty because you're not covered.

With that said, I have showered, swum, surfed, snorkelled, etc in mine since the Series 2 and never had an issue.

I have spent a number of years doing regular open water swimming with Apple Watches each summer. Seriously, it's not a problem at all.

However for the sake of longevity I recommend rinsing any watch in fresh water after it has been exposed to salt water, chlorine or sweat.

I think they are covering themselves for a potential scenario where a device is exposed to water after having been impact damaged. Sports watches have clearly defined design limits for water ingress, so they don't get water damage when used correctly.

Does anyone know (based on past experience) if any NZ retailers normally drop the price of previous models after the announcement of this new iPhone 14?

As I'm looking to get an iPhone, either 12/12 mini/13 mini, but thought I'd wait in case price drops?

Apple generally keep the previous two generations of iPhone available as cheaper alternatives, but it's my understanding that the 12 mini and 13 mini will be discontinued so you would have to opt for a full size model or an SE.

I don’t have a Watch so was unaware of that but it’s very interesting. Subsequently found this:

That and the CGA covers a device being sold for swimming and rated for use in water - if it leaks it’s not fit for purpose

Apple are generally pretty liberal with their warranty, regardless of what their warranty says. YMMV and some people have problems but they are better than most.

13 mini is being kept and in the US at least had a price drop.

13 mini remains and gets a price drop.

Did they seriously just raise the SE price $50? I could have sworn it was $799 and now it's $849

In terms of processing, the mini 13 and iphone 14 are very similar,, they didn't even change the chip this year. So IMO it makes sense for them to keep the mini. It is a bit like the ipad mini where they just keep selling it as a older model until the choose to update it or not. There is a market for smaller photne, and the SE4 is expected to use the old iphone XR chassis and screen, which is a pretty chunky phone compared to the current SE and the iphone mini.

Yes. Sneaky of them . It is still $799 at NL, but 64GB IMO is too small for many you really need at least the 128GB these days.
