corksta: Nah they didn't even ask. Plus I had it spilling out everywhere, had to buy a second suitcase and was carrying the HP MediaSmart server as hand luggage!

At least iPads would be easier to pack!
LOL at carrying a server as hand luggage! any funny stares from the fellow passengers? :P

As we all know Apple are very tight-lipped with this sort of thing so I would say that any 'information' out there at the moment is probably nothing more than speculation.

I'm not saying that I necessarily disagree that it's likely that the iPad launch in New Zealand could be months behind Australia considering that the New Zealand iTunes music store which was expected to be lauched at the same time as the Australian store ended up over a year behind, but anything is possible.

Remember that NZ is a country where Apple is only active through the Apple Store, which is owned and operated by Apple Asia trough Apple Australia, but not through its own retail sores, which is delegated to Renaissance, which has delegated store operations to MagnumMac and a few other authorized sellers.  It is therefore not a country where Apple has the same profit motive and control over marketing as in several of its other countries and thus its profit importance is quite low...

Couldnt have said it better myself actually.

It'd be nice if Apple actually got into our country properly, instead of all this middleman (well, middleMEN) business.

There is no profit in a country of 4 million people with low disposable income... Life would be better if Renaissance was better at managing their retail operations (they just posted a loss... how could you possibly lose money if you own the Apple brand in a country???). Their customer service is a -10 on the Dzenghis Khan scale, and short on putting nail strips across their doors they do everything to drive customers away.

Hi Tosh, from what source do you claim Renaissance has bad customer service?

I ask because I've had nothing but "lukewarm" dealings with their service division. No friendliness whatsoever, and if I had any choice I'd never deal with my local. But what choice do I have?

It made me start up a conversation with a friend - what motivation is there for a sole agent service centre for ANY brand to provide good customer service? I had similar issues with a franchise car dealer's service department, but they finally came to the party which helps motivate me to return (but to be honest I'd have gone back regardless as they pretty much have me by the balls - and know it).

To be honest with you, dealing with the Service center for my MacbookPro, I had pretty good service from there.
The lady at front desk served me with a smile, and the technician (which also happens to be a registered user here) was friendly and seemed very approachable, and was happy to explain/answer any questions I had when I went in to have my battery replaced.

Maybe I was lucky, I don't know, but I can say I was definitely happy.

The only problem I did have, was that they don't stock any parts, so I had to go drop my laptop off and leave it there and come back when they had ordered a battery from Australia.
This is my only gripe with anything to do with Apple in NZ. I much prefer the service options they have in the US and the likes, where you can either deal with it by mail, or go to your apple store, where basic tasks are carried out by the genius' and they actually have stock there.

toshcomputers: iPads will be in NZ on Wednesday for review of how easy or not the activation process is. iTunes can be downloaded for free and will run on most PCs/Macs.

Good to hear - will you also be testing to see if the iPad App store works? I have read online that there have been some hassles overseas meaning that you may need to have an american itunes account (Meaning you need a US credit Card or itunes gift card to buy apps).

Are you able to update the forum once you know? Can you guys supply US itunes Gift Cards if needed?

Tosh, Will the Wi-Fi only iPad start shipping tomorrow or you expect those to ship end of April, same time as the 3G versions?
