Cheers Miguel.
Just had a play with one of the jailbroken ones in the VF store (lol)..
Probably shouldn't have because now the three week wait is going to be even worse. Screen is amazing and it's so fast after a 3G. Camera seemed good too, shutter response was really fast, probably faster than my Canon P&S.
Voda guy said that all 5000 sold out in about 2 hrs, so I guess that was 5000 units nationwide.

Ha ha...I was tempted at Queen Street yesterday!!!!

I was being watched, however.

I also thought of opening Veetle and just streaming a movie ad infinitum out of spite.

What is GPS like on an iphone? Is it comparable to a dedicated GPS unit for car use?

It's not bad to be honest.

Using the likes of the Tom Tom app, it works very well, with the odd glitch (like when you stop and it forgets which way you were going)...

all in all, it'll  never be AS GOOD, but it's pretty decent.

Does it rely on a data connection? Any recommended apps? Is the Tom Tom unit the way to go?

Tom Tom doesn't rely on data per se. It uses A-GPS, but is network independent (as is most if not all GPS functionality).

It utilises stored maps on the device, so no expensive data usage as the maps load as you go (like Google Maps).

Tom Tom is $100 (more or less) and i think it's worth the money.

Riiiight... well I just need a phone to test with first. I'll keep you posted ;-)

Edit: oh, and I can add that TomTom is definitely a great app for the money. No data charges, no upgrade fees.

Apparently if you're super-keen the TomTom iPhone car kit holder thingy (Dick Smith stock them) gives better reception around town (it has its own GPS chip in the base) and therefore better response times. $190 though... Also gives handsfree Bluetooth.

A bit of DIY is required to get the iPhone 4 to sit correctly in the dock though.

Yeah, the other thing is, despite the onscreen display very occasionally getting confused when in town, my experience is the voice prompts are still spot on calling out the street name and distance to it. Technically you shouldn't be looking at the screen while driving anyway, and at that cost I think the kit is a huge rip.

Loving it.  I was FIRST in the queue at Glenfield and was out of there with the new phone by 12.06.

Of course the screen is good, most of us know that.

GPS is incredible compared to 3g.  Previously could arrive at destination before it locked on the satellites.  Now it is instantaneous, and incredibly accurate, with the gyro/compass it know which was you are facing.  I have the Tom Tom app and its as good as a dedicated unit.

Videos are great in 720p, but the best thing is the mic and sound quality.  I went the Thirty Seconds to Mars concert last night and can honestly say scored what appears to be the best video on youtube of the NZ concert.

Check it out, I had to reduce it 480 otherwise it would take 3 hours to upload, rotated the image, and zoomed in a couple of times, which caused some pixelation, - in 720p it is much better - But the sound is all original and pretty darn good for a phone.

Let me know what you think...

Nice! I may have to borrow my wifes iPhone 4 for the Paramore (my daughter's first real concert) and Metallica concerts in October. How big was the original 720p version of that file?
