In another word... iPhone 4 launch in NZ is totally foobar!!! Vodafone NZ to be blamed mostly as they'd be the distributor - as I learnt.

*sigh* It'll be very very hard for Vodafone NZ trying to salvage back as much reputation as possible... it easier to get tarnished but harder to recover... confidence level with Vodafone NZ I guess be pretty low from customers, new buyers, and other resellers... *tsk tsk tsk*

BUT... there's always up when you hit rock bottom!! So... start climbing.

Let's put it this way, if there were other retailers selling the iphone today as well do you think the lines would have been as big outside VF stores, no way.

It's ONLY because VF has a temporary monopoly and demand has exceeded apparent supply that there are ques.

VF sent out pre-reg info which in the end meant absolutely nothing, told customers than rang up over the past few days to enquire about resigns the wrong thing, told customers as late as 8am this morning the launch was cancelled etc etc.

[bolded section]Not really. if thay had been able to fulfill the excess demand they would have made a hell of a lot more sales. as it is, they have sold less than they could have if they had the stock, and annoyed a whole bunch of customers by keeping them waiting for hours this morning, and then again this afternoon only to turn them away dissapointed. Customers who are early adopters too, so strong influencers and who may well go to 2D or XT now.

Your dreaming, as the majority of people dont give a flying ****. The few geeks that are so self involved that their self image revolves around what Apple devices they are using, think this is major issue, but once again nobody really cares.

I must've missed the national outpouring of sympathy because a few people couldn't get the device at midnight, or that some people will miss out...

This happened with the original, the 3GS, and now the 4, but the world still turns, life still goes on, and still nobody really cares.

They (Vodafone NZ) would've been able to gauge the size of demand through the pre-registration! I mean, you don't gather information and not making good use of that knowledge, AND not by sending out the "release" information after the limited goods are all sold out..

There's a lot of time Vodafone NZ could've keep the enraged and eagered customers under control by communication. Which something that their PR seems not know how best to do it... They may have Apple's NDA gagging on them but still some "sort" of communication to help calm the rough crowd...

Yes, they would have sold their entire stock. They dont make the phone, therefore they operate under the constraints of supply/demand. Apple may have cost themselves money by undersupplying NZ, but as long as VFNZ has more people wanting it than available, its a success.

As evidenced by people still lining up.

Sorry - but they made a complete hash of it. Standing for 3 hours with zero information is not good. They would not say how many were in stock, just kept us all waiting in the hopes that we might be faced with the opportunity to be parted with our money.

It's complete $hit. Why they didn't just hand out tickets i'll never know, instead they left us milling around like seagulls waiting for someone to throw us a freaken cracker.

Inside the shop there was one monkey processing orders and half a dozen fluffers posing around looking important and talking on phones.

Just my observations.

I would disagree that this was a major success as you called it.
I dont think vodafone would be calling it a success either.

They announced a launch date, they then said it was off, then it was on again, adverts come and go from their website. then wait.. they only have a few hundred phones to sell nationwide. No matter what way you spin it most companies would be a bit embarassed and not call it a major success as you put it. The emails to let people know about the phone in some cases came out 2 hours after the phone had sold out..

Yeah major success..... lets be at least a little realistic... maybe it wasnt entirely their fault for sure but they played their part in it. You just need to look at our neighbours to see what a successful launch is.

Depends what side your looking from, from a customers point of view, its a major debacle. As i said from an economic viewpoint its a success. If people where boycotting both VFNZ and Apple then I'd agree, but people spout BS, then still line up to get one.

Unfortunately you cant run a company on customers wishes.
