Just got 2 from my local voda branch... Went in at 11:30 and got the papers to sign up. Joined the queue at 12:15 waited for 30 mins and left. Went back @ 1:45 they had sold out & the guy i saw earlier grabbed me. He had put 2 aside for me out of the 18 they got.... what a legend!

Happy wife & happy me!

Edit - He also reckons the delay was due to a price dispute between Voda & Apple....

Any way you look at it, launch information was given to the public, that information wasn't accurate resulting in a failure to deliver, whos to blame? - that will come out in time, in the meantime you are simply speculating.
If you want an example of a successful iPhone 4 launch lets look at the Australian launch for a how-to on keeping all parties happy. This is a semi-fail launch, because only some people got what they wanted. The rest are justifiably annoyed. I'm not taking any side on this, these are simply the facts to date.

MikeyPI:

Yes, they would have sold their entire stock. They dont make the phone, therefore they operate under the constraints of supply/demand. Apple may have cost themselves money by undersupplying NZ, but as long as VFNZ has more people wanting it than available, its a success.

As evidenced by people still lining up.

It would only be considered a success if the people who didn't get one were just annoyed at being a bit late, not totally pissed off with not getting information and changing providers.

+1 to this.

Although to note, Apple promised sale on the 30th, not VNFZ, and now you can get one from VFNZ, but not Apple...

Nope just the devils advocate. Somebody who deals with confidential business agreements regularly, watching people going off half-cocked with no info to back up their speculation.

You can, from their website after 8pm (or 9, not sure).

What it seems is that, once again, Vodafone did not have the buying power (or whatever) to get a good number of devices, and instead opted to go with the circus act of leaving a 100+ line in front of a store (Queen St, Akl as an example) only to give false hope that there would be enough for everyone.

Apple also stated in their press release that authorised resellers would be selling the phone outright today. AFAIK that hasn't happened at all. So who do you blame for that, Apple or VF?

Exactly.. Who is to blame? I too would like to know, as a form of perverse curiosity.

And posting for the hell of it?

Hmm a major economic success you say?  I guess it is also a major success for cafe owners near Vodafone stores as they probably had more customers coming in.

That is just as relevant to the conversation as your little tidbits
