My favourite part:

and neither is backing up your computer if it contains copyrighted content.

Basically makes everyone a criminal. Just like some governments wanting to make everyone a beneficiary. The copyright laws will only get worse IMO if we join the TPP.

Content providers are stuck in the 70's when it was almost impossible to copy anything at home. Times have changed they need to embrace the digital world and make things affordable or they will just keep losing money by charging insane money for content.

It wasn't the Govt, the High Court overturned the Govt ruling

IN this case yes. But just watch what happens with the TPP, as I suspect that there will be major changes to our copyright laws with that.

Have to wonder what this means for cloud backup services.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Quite possibly. Although we already have copyright laws, and foreigners taking copyright infringers to ComCom, except it ain't really happening much anymore. Can't recall the last I read on the news. Since then, we have music streaming such as Spotify, all you can eat SVOD thats cheap as chips. Talk about dilution.

Same, Id say. If you have a copyright protected file, it has to stay as one file. What about a backup into a non file?  Non file being say C:/Documents  to documents.zip.
Its not copied as its not a copy now. Its embedded into one large file. That might be a technicality they missed.

I guess they say that if you bought a hard book, and lost it, had it stolen, it got burnt, then its gone, same with a computer file under their ruling. Its a great set of laws, they just forgot the sanity check of common sense

The British Government created the laws in the first place. They then become bound to follow them too.

If you look at some the things recently proposed by David Cameron, then I am not surprised by this situation at all.

They get Kim Dotcommed. He was the first, because he's such an unlikable target. It's worked out perfectly: almost everyone you ask is so sick of him that they'll happily hang him, without even considering the precedents that a successful prosecution against him would set:

  • It is OK to arrest someone whose alleged crime is to make it easier for other people to share infringing copies of DVDs by sending in helicopter-mounted, military-armed police in a dawn raid, based on information provided by the state secret intelligence services
  • Exactly 3 seconds after the verdict is handed down, the Rights Holders will be marching through the doors of the likes of Apple, Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, and your ISP to have a friendly chat and casually mention that it was such a shame what happened to Kim Dotcom, but you know, we know you are really good guys, and so you'll certainly want to contribute to our program of making sure this doesn't happen to you too
I don't really like him either. But you've got to look past the man, and consider the bigger picture.

From the article: "It is now unlawful to make private copies of copyright works you own, without permission from the copyright holder – this includes format shifting from one medium to another".  I see how this obviously affects ripping a new CD from your iTunes library, but wouldn't that definition also prohibit importing tracks from a CD you bought into iTunes in the first place?

one important part might be the "without permission from the copyright holder"  If the rights holder gives you permission to use iTunes functionality, then it's all fine.

Seeing as Apple have a pretty strong sway with the music industry record labels, it wouldn't be too hard to persuade the rights holders to make an exception for this sort of use case.
