On my Nokia cellphone, it didn't matter if the Caller ID for a call/txt read:

1) +6421 abc defg (ie. for TXTs)

or 2) 021 abc defg (ie. for calls)

As long as I had a Contact with a saved number ENDING in "abc defg", it would list "Name of Contact" on the phone.

Not so with iPhone.

Vodafone gives the iPhone 2 different CID formats - one for SMS and one for voice calls (as above). However in order for the iPhone to correct display the name of the contact when this contact rings or TXTs, you have to add BOTH number formats as phone numbers for the contact.

This is stupid! Or am I missing something?

All my numbers are stored in the international format (+642xxx) and I have no issues with SMS/Phone picking up the right contact - plus its easier when you go roaming :P

Well I spent all night doing this (remember the "stupid" iPhone can't even read the SIM without 3rd party software), and if you receive a call from said cellphone, it will list as "02xxxx" (if you are with Vodafone at least), rather than the contact name!

Hmmm I havent had any problems with numbers on my iphone in particular but this seems to be a common issue with all phones that ive owned.

As for reading the sim contacts there is a button in the native interface to import all your sim contacts....

Even on 1.1.4? I didn't see anything.

I added a friend with +6421xxxxxx to my address book

He phoned me after this, and it came up with "021xxxxxx"

It did not recognise it from the phonebook.

I added another friend with 021xxxxxx format

His TXTs in "SMS App" show the sender as +6421xxxxxx and it doesn't recognise that he's in my phone book.

even in settings->mail,contacts,calendars, down the bottom theres "import sim contacts"

No idea if its in 1, is definetly in 2.

Agree with the number thing, is definetly annoying dunno if its network or handset related but my iphone seems pretty good at handling it. Havent had any issues yet. My previous e65 was pretty bad at doing this

Have you got the "carrier settings" update from itunes, I believe some of these things are stored in that.

Any particular reason why?

Any particular reason why?

Stability (found interface on 2 to be sluggish), but more importantly certainty about controlling when I use mobile data (so far only 1 day since the $1/10Mb plan was introduced). But I'm going on holiday soon so I want to be able to easily enable data for the duration without having to spend $1 each time to speak to Customer services to "hard" enable or disable my data.

And no current compelling reasons to upgrade to 2.

I have the same problem on the iPhone 3G, I am running v 2.02 with the latest carrier updates.

All my numbers are stored as +64 format and everything works except when 8 digit i.e 021 xxx xx xxx vodafone prepay numbers call me they don't match, no problem when they text me or with any other phone numbers....

2.1 seems fast and rock solid and if u wanna turn edge off cydia can install boss prefs and that has edge on and off so there u can control if u have data access or not.
I used quickpwn on the mac after manually updating to 2.1 in itunes and it runs sweet as . I would not consider going back to 1.1.4 now 2.1 is out.. too many pluses to go back

There has been debate about whether BossPrefs can turn off data completely on a 2G phone.

I don't want to risk it as it was enough trouble finding a Mac I could downgrade my phone with the first time.
