Hi All,

I've just switched my mums sim card in her iphone 5 from spark to vodafone. The phone tells me that it is sim locked but Spark insist that they have never locked any of the iphones.

What I thought should be a straight forward operation is turning into a mission. I've done extensive googling and reset the phone back to factory settings (due to a missed update). The phone also tells me it needs to be activated but won't let me do it either via wifi or tethered as the sim card isn't valid.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Chris

@cep32 Where was the iPhone purchased from brand new? If purchased second hand this might be a problem

It was a refurbished one from the oneday website bought ages ago. She has been using it with a Spark sim for at least the last 5 years with no problems. It's only when we have come to switch to a vodafone sim that it has become a problem.

As SparkNZ has confirmed they do not SIM lock iPhones but this handset has zero to do with Spark or Vodafone

You need to speak to place of purchase

You need to return it to one day. You won't get it to work. It's probably a locked phone from another country. There was a thread a few years ago about the exact same issue with one day phones. Can't remember what the reason was.

Is the phone saying the new SIM is “not valid” or is it displaying “Locked SIM” in the top left corner and prompting for a PIN?

If you call AppleCare and give them the serial number they should be able to tell you if it is carrier locked and what carrier it is locked to.
