Hey Guys.

Just under two weeks ago I made the tough decision to go from an E71 to an iPhone 3GS White 16gb.  A few days after having it, it developed hairline cracks all around the edges.  I took it back to DSE who sent it to MFR and replaced it, which I expect is a refurb.  The thing that bugs me, if there is a small scuff mark on one of the bottom corners, almost like it has been dropped, but the white plastic is perfect as though it has been replaced.  I can kinda get past this, but I'm sure the vibrate seems a little noisier too.  Is this some crusty unit thats just had a new back plate put on? I mean my iphone was brand new except for the cracks, how far does a refurb go, eg same old battery etc?

Every single iPod is replaced with a refurbished unit. They do not repair yours, hence why their turn around times are usually so fast.

I agree, that's annoying. If your forking out that much money for a phone, then you should expect quality. Those hairline cracks are an acknowledged defect by Apple. If that replacement you got is not up to standard, go back and tell them. They should listen.

I can appreciate the benefits of this practice in terms of service turnaround times, but I think the ethics here are highly questionable. Your device was two weeks old but for all you know the refurbished unit that you have ended up with might be, or at least have components which have had much more than two weeks of usage.

If I were in your position I would approach the repair agent in a non confrontational manner and make some enquiries as to the history of the unit that you have ended up with. If they're not able to provide you with any comfort then I would be demanding a more satisfactory resolution.

yeah, thats exactly how I feel, my unit was less than two weeks old, and who knows about this thing. I have contacted them via email the other day, when I'm back in Auckland I will visit them if they arent in touch by then.

Update: They replaced the replacement, which at least doesnt have the scuff marks of the last one, or the misaligned case at the bottom, but it is beginning to develop cracks near one of the bottom screws!

This sucks! I may as well have kept my first one, at least I knew it was completely new!

I would approach DSE, and ask them to resolve it in a manner that they would personally be happy with. Be polite, but firm.
