I’m after a Chromecast Audio for my youngest kid, who thinks he’s missing out in not being able to control his music via a Google Home, rather having to settle for only a Bluetooth connection to his stereo (poor mite).

I know DSE/Kogan is selling them, but just thought I’d see if anyone here has one they don’t need; I’m in no hurry to get it as it’s likely to be an Xmas present.

Please post here or PM me if you have one you’re happy to sell.

Thanks.

So as to not start an almost identical thread, I’ll add my request for a chromecast audio to this thread. I’m not wanting to hijack @jonathan18, so the OP has first dibs.

Does Google Home not have an 'audio out' like the Echo Dot?

That's correct, it doesn't. But the new Chromecast has an audio feature apparently, so I think if you can cast audio only through home theatre systems.

Edit, apparently that multiroom audio feature was rolled out to Chromecast second gen and up too.

Hi Jonathan

Just to let you know, make sure that you try and use a dedicated USB power supply, preferably the one provided by chromecast.

This is from my experience but you may have none of the following.

I tried using the USB port on my Panasonic DVR to power the 'puck' and found there was some annoying audio interference , specially when there was no music playing.

After googling this issue, the solution was to use the one provided in the box.   However my issues went away when I used a non generic USB power supply.

cheers

Thanks for the replies; just followed up with YJ re his offer for one, but will confirm if this goes through (given Kiwifruita's also after one).

It's a real shame Google discontinued the Chromecast Audio, especially given none of their own smart speakers (with or without screens) have an audio out. This means to get decent sound out of one of these products one needs a device like a Chromecast Audio! I can set our Google Home Mini or Hub to use a specific Chromecast as the default audio player (so the 'speaker' becomes simply the control interface), which is an acceptable work-around but it's more costly and complex than it needs to be.

There is the advantage, though, of allowing 'controller' and 'speaker' to be separated physically; for example, we've just put a Home Mini in the lounge, and have been able to place it nowhere near the speakers  (which would have not been possible if they were a single device, given the cable problem).

I'm assuming the ability of the (video) Chromecasts to now output audio only is limited in use (to not much more than HT amps and soundbars, I guess) thanks to these only having an HDMI output?

Qwertee: thanks for the heads-up on the power supply issue; I think all of our current four CC Audios are using their original power supply, but I'll avoid running my son's new one off the stereo's USB port (which would certainly be logical if it didn't cause issues).

Oh, you can also get a Google home mini to play audio by Bluetooth , so that might work for you

Thanks for that! I had noted earlier I could connect BT speakers to these Home devices, but hadn't even thought of connecting my son's stereo to one of them that way. Will give it a go.

Thanks, YJ - purchase of a Chromecast underway.

@Kiwifruta - if you're still after one, I note there's a business on TM that's selling them for $35 plus shipping. Despite the indication to 'save 65%', these Chromecasts are actually ex-lease (so not really fair to compare to a theoretical 'new' price, and anyway I recall paying more like $60 new) and don't apparently come with a power adapter, but still they offer a one year warranty.

Read today that Google looks to be releasing a replacement to the Home Mini, called the Nest Mini, which apparently addresses the absence of audio out with a 3.5mm socket, though I'm not sure if it's analogue only or dual analogue/optical like the Chromecast Audio.
