So I got a freee Ryzen 5 1400 CPU from a mate and reciently a cheap B450 Gigabyte motherboard I cant send back.

However I am having issues getting it to boot regularly and already tested/swapped the RAM so to work out if its the board or the CPU I am thinking I should buy another CPU. When it does boot its rock solid but every 2nd or 3rd boot it wont do anything until I power down.

Anyone upgraded to 3rd gen and know the CPU is working and happy to shift on the old one cheap ?
New Boards are at least $130 so really hope its the CPU

I am in Auckland and can collect (Todays possible 😀) or pay for shipping.

Thanks for reading this far.

very unlikely to be the CPU.. much more likely to be motherboard or something else like the fan not been seated correctly.

have you updated the bios on that board?

Yep BIOS is 42f .. latest .. my mates 2700X worked fine on the board so he/we/google think its a voltage issue on the 1400 during initialisation .. once it boots it works 100% perfectly .. I had been just leaving it running but got a few $ together so thought would look at swapping it since it was free.

have you changed the power supply just to rule it out?

how many dimms of ram are you using?

yep tried 2 Powersupply (mine is a new Corsair 650W) and different RAM - tried 1 dimm in each slot and different speed.

I got the CPU free as my friend upgraded and did say he was having issues - hence the upgrade - but his issues were different

I am 93.276% sure the CPU is to blame and have ordered a Ryzen 3 1200 from AliExpress for $60 but that might take months to arrive

Tried reseating the CPU?

Does anything happen when it doesn't boot at all?

Cheers - yep its been in and out about 10 times.

When it wont boot the Gigabyte logo shows up and then it freezes. Sometimes it will go straight to BIOS but that can freeze too.
When it does boot its 100% stable - no crashes.

From a bit of googling and others with similar issues on Reddit etc the concensus was its a voltage thing on the CPU during initialisation, either in the CPU voltage or the RAM voltages and not easily solved - hence the new CPU requirement.
