I’m looking for a Gigabit switch with at least two of the ports offering PoE, supporting 802.3af (for use with a couple of APs, likely to be Unifi 6 Lites).

Fine with something small, eg 4-6 ports would be totally adequate, but happy with say an 8.

If anyone has got anything suitable they’d like to part with please reply here or PM me.

Thanks.

Hi not sure if you have had any response, but if you end up needing to purchase new I have found these about as keen price wise as you will find.

Thanks for that; good to know good new options if I can’t find one sh.

Someone’s offered a Cisco SG 200-08P, which while not the newest looks like it’ll do the job and be compatible with either the Unifi 6 Lite or Aruba AP22 (if I can make up my mind which to buy...).

Whilst the options that @Cyril provided is totally adequate, just to give you some more (managed) options, TP-Link also have a "Managed" switch in a similar flavour:

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/SWHTPL0150/TP-Link-TL-SG105PE-5-Port-Gigabit-Easy-Smart-Switc

They also have an 8-port version, although only 4 of those ports are PoE capable: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/SWHTPL0150/TP-Link-TL-SG105PE-5-Port-Gigabit-Easy-Smart-Switc

I have the 8-port version which I'd like with slightly more control, and as such I could do VLANs etc on the ports (for testing devices etc).

D-Link also have something similar, albeit a bit more expensive: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/SWHDLK60502018/D-Link-DGS-1100-05PD-5-Port-Gigabit-Smart-Managed

I tool have the D-Link, installed in the roof space to provide power to an external IP Camera. What I found interesting with the D-Link is that it can draw power to the unit via PoE itself, so for my case I only have a RJ-45 CAT6 cable from my study where my main router is located to the roof space.  I have a PoE injector in the study to provide power + ethernet connectivity to the switch.  Works really well for me, and with the PoE injector in the study if for whatever reason I need to restart the switch I could just unplug the PoE injector without having to access the roof space.

Just giving you some more options in case you would like to pursue the "amanged switch" path...

I have several of these in my house. POE powered and with 2xPOE passthrough

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/SWHNGR2709157/NETGEAR-5-Port-PoE-Gigabit-Ethernet-Plus-Switch-GS

Work great for me - I have only 6 Cat5e runs in my house so a POE powered switch in each room that has several wired devices is a good solution.

Cheers - N

Hi, just be carefull with what POE standards the switch supports if you go with UniFi AP's, they use a slightly less common variant that most POE injectors/switches with full PD support will correctly sense, but not all.

The TPLinks work correctly, cannot be sure about the Netgear, I am sure it would be until tested cannot say.

Cisco switches both SG-xxx series and Catalyst work, and only last week added some UniFi APs to a 9200 and it worked fine.

Thanks for all the further advice and suggestions, especially the warning re potential compatibility issues for the Unifis.

My interest in purchasing a switch has been pushed by the possibility of either the Unifis or Arubas not being compatible with the PoE injectors I’m using with our current Grandstream APs – does anyone know with some confidence that these would work ok? (In which case I could just hold off buying a switch altogether, waiting until I have the time/money to do a more comprehensive tidy-up of the overall network around the house).

I've got one of these you could have for $50 including shipping. I'm in Tauranga if you want to pickup.

Since you've got Unifi APs, you'd might as well keep the management easy & use a Unifi switch.

This one has eight ports, with four of those able to power devices with 802.3af PoE.

Not the cheapest by any means, but management is a breeze & also provides stats to the Unifi controller.

Sorry my mistake. Now I'm looking at it, I've actually got a spare TL-SF1008P

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/SWHTPL1011/TP-Link-TL-SF1008P-8-Port-10100M-Unmanaged-PoE-Swi

Its 8 port unmanaged, with 4 POE ports, but only 100mbps which probably isn't what you want for a fast AC wireless setup.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice on this thread; and thanks to phrozenpenguin for selling me a suitable switch.

Having decided to buy a third AP that won't be able to plug into this PoE switch, I'm also looking for a PoE injector or power adapter that's compatible with the Aruba IAP-315 I've bought - does anyone have anything suitable they'd be willing to sell me?  Relevant specs below.

Thanks heaps

From the Aruba data sheet states:

Direct DC source: 12Vdc nominal, +/- 5%
- Interface accepts 2.1/5.5-mm center-positive circular
plug with 9.5-mm length
• Power over Ethernet (PoE): 48 Vdc (nominal)
802.3af/802.3at compliant source
- Unrestricted functionality with 802.3at PoE
- When using IPM, the AP may enter power-save mode
with reduced functionality when powered by an 802.3af
PoE source (see details on Intelligent Power Monitoring
elsewhere in this datasheet)
- Without IPM, the USB port is disabled and transmit
power of the 2.4 GHz radio chains are reduced by 3dB
to 15dBm max when the AP is powered by an 802.3af
PoE source

RunningMan:

@jonathan18 this should do https://www.jaycar.co.nz/12v-dc-1-5a-slim-power-supply-7dc-plugs/p/MP3486

Thanks for this @RunningMan; an affordable option, but just to check will one of those plugs fit ok? Specs say 2.1/5.5mm, and the closest of the supplied plugs are 2.5/5.5mm or 2.1/5.0mm.

In terms of a s/h option, would this $20 Ubiquiti PoE injector do the job (or would I need more details to confirm this)?

The 2.1mm plug should be fine (2.1 is the internal diameter).

I think the linked injector on TM would be fine - assume it means 802.3af not 802.11af. I'm sure @sbiddle would confirm for you though.

That UBNT power supply is not fully 802.3af compliant and won't work on all 802.3af devices - it uses mode B (power on 4/5 7/8) rather than the standard mode A 1/2 3/6 data pairs.

Some 802.3af hardware will power up using this and support both A and B, but lots of devices won't. I'm don't know if Aruba supports both modes.
