Has anyone played with any of these?

Bought a cheap tk102 based tracker from ebay - fits in my obd port. It did come with some software that allows for some higher functions (ie obd data to be transmitted also, but it didn't seem to do much, and I preferred a web service based tool).

Had a look at traccar and got that set up on a linux machine at home, seems ok Does lack geofencing and alerting, which is something I'm keen on.

So may look at opengts - apparently traccar can talk to it (updates the db directly).

Seems a bit of a giggle. I like the idea of setting geofenced locations. Basically want to know where the car is for unauthorised use, and currently when I take a long drive I track it via my phone, so I'd be able to do this via the site also.

I am working on a new product along with some chaps in Europe which is similar to this. It is based on the OwnTracks location tracking app but adds a load of extra functionality like tracks, geofences, alerts and the like. It also has a web UI along with a dedicated iOS app (nothing for Android yet).

We are using hardware from Greenwich with our own firmware running on it to 'speak' to OwnTracks. So far it is still in development but the software is all open source so have a look around if you like.

The idea behind both OwnTracks and Pista is that you own all your data - there is no 3rd party server collecting location data and serving it back to you. Everything is done using MQTT and TLS so it is very secure and totally private, assuming you are running your own MQTT broker.

So for something like this where you might be running your own hardware (have I got that right) to get the data in there, there might need to be something like traccar to receive the data and feed your system? Traccar seems to have it's own db and system, but also seems to be pretty flexible in receiving data from various types of devices. And so he's adapted it to feed other backends.

Honestly I only just started looking at this stuff in the weekend.

OwnTracks Pista is the software. It has its own db and web server etc. The hardware is the Greenwich (http://jpmens.net/2014/09/18/choral-greenwich-owntracks-edition-goes-into-production/) which you install in your car. It has a GPS and GSM module. We add some firmware of our own to generate the necessary MQTT payloads which are sent to your server running the Pista stuff. All the clever stuff happens in Pista once the location reports arrive from your car. I.e. tracking, geofencing, alerts etc.

There is nothing to stop you using different hardware as long as it was capable of reporting MQTT location publishes in the correct format.

Nice to see that people here in New Zealand are interested in my project.

I don't visit this forum very often, so I want to leave contact information if someone wants to try Traccar or has any questions/problems/feedback.
