We currently have naked ADSL through Maxnet and VOIP through XNET.

I am looking to switch to a bundled phone and ADSL package with Snap, hopefully keeping our local phone number (which was originally ported from a normal Telecom account).

Is there any particular order I should or shouldn't do things in to avoid losing the number or getting stuck in limbo in some way? Still hear horror stories around the area of provisioning and porting.

Snap should be able to organise it for you in the right sequence.

They might be able to give you a temporary number to get the ADSL and POTS up and running (while you still use VoIP), but then switch it over to your current number when the number port can be scheduled.

If you give them enough notice they should be able to make it line up nicely.

Snap will organise for you. But whatever you do DO NOT CANCEL the services until Snap has connected your line and VoIP.

Once it's all done and working you can contact the old ISP to confirm service/contract is closed.

Thanks for the answers. Just to clarify, I am going with 'standard' ADSL and POTS line from snap, not naked + VOIP. That's why I thought it might get messy....

Are you in serviced from the same exchange you were when you ported to VoIP? If you have moved your number can't be ported back to another exchange. it can be ported back to the original NEAX, but you'll have a new number and will to pay $20ish per month extra for that number to become a CustomerLink number.

Hmmm...define 'exchange'. (not being cheeky, I don't know if greater Napier is serviced by one exchange or several). We have moved house since getting our original number ported to VOIP, however the move was within an area where I know I still could have kept the number, had it not now been a VOIP number. (hope that makes sense).

Either way, I've applied to Snap, and if I end up with a new number, so be it. Only really keeping the phone for the house alarm, hardly use it.

Hey Guys,

Chorus actually updated quite a few of the Broadband connection forms late last year to accommodate for in-porting of phone connections from other networks! My understanding is that this was specifically aimed at moving connections more easily to and from UCLL providers as this has become quite a bit more popular, but it works just the same for numbers coming from VoIP also. The only thing to ensure is that you note on your sign up that the number is coming from VoIP and supply all your current provider account details.

Also note (I know this has been floating around on other threads!) that there is a $52 connection fee for this type of order, that is because it is a NEW connection on the chorus network, irrelevant to whether it is a new or in-ported number. There are no charges for the porting side of the order for any residential connections.

Just keep VOIP for now and use Naked connection through Snap and put VOIP details into the Fritz Box they supply way cheaper and more features than analogue line.

I was told that because we have moved since we got the number, it can not be ported back to the copper lines (my words, not his). No big deal, they were able to secure a number with a different prefix but same suffix.

Not way cheaper - naked is $70, my VOIP was $12, wheres ADSL bundled with phone is $75. I hardly use the phone, so won't miss caller ID or voice mail. The Fritz box is only supplied with a 24 month contract or if you pay. No thanks, got a router.

That did get mentioned. They thought that MAYBE they could allow me to use their VOIP on a normal BB account, and that this could be done for the same price.

But I'd need a Fritz box which is back to 24month contract or paying for it. Apparently their VOIP can not be run through my existing Linksys PAP2 (no idea why).

The bundle just seemed like less hassle. ADSL already hooked up, which was faster than I thought it would be. Not sure about phone yet, have to do some rewiring in the roof cause of the alarm.

Couple of comments on the service if anyone is interested:

1. When I applied online there was no email or telephone or text confirmation. It wasn't until I rang the next day that I knew they had even received the application. Turns out they needed a bit more info so I wonder how long it would have taken for them to contact me had I not rung.
2. When the ADSL was switched over there was no notification. I was at work so wifie just assumed it was broken. The weird thing is they just present you with a Snap branded page saying your username and/or password is wrong, and to either fix that or call them. This is actually incorrect. I was authenticating just fine, but I needed to call to get them to initiate the billing cycle before access to the web was granted. Kinda misleading and a little rude I thought.
3. So all in all pretty painless, however the communication was not up to scratch. The CSR I spoke to suggested perhaps the emails were going to my spam folder. That isn't the case. The first email I got was AFTER calling them the second time and getting the billing kicked off, so they need to sort that. I can imagine if it was somebody like my parents trying to to this, they would have just sat at home thinking it was all under control.....who knows how long they would have waited.....

An exchange is.. well.. a NEAX phone exchange. Napier has multiple exchanges so if you're moving to a different exchange area then you'll need to get a new number. As explained you can keep your existing number even if you move to a different exchange (or infact anywhere in NZ) by porting it back to the PSTN as a Customerlink number which is merely a call forward to your new number, however this will cost you a monthly fee.
