I recently changed to Orcon 900mbp plan but not so impressed with the speed I am getting. Just want to see if anyone here could help me.

The speed I am getting right now is about 100-350mbp download and 300-400mbp upload. I did the testing with a wired connection to my desktop. I have also tried, rebooting the router and ONT, using different cables (both cat5e and cat6), using different computers, making use only 1 device is connected to the router during the testing, using different routers (previously Huawei H659, now ASUS TUF ax3000). However, they are all giving me the same results.

Talked to Orcon about it. While they were friendly enough but didnt provide any good solution.

I think the upload speed seems to be ok, but just cant get over 400mbp for download speed. And most often is only 250mbp.

Any ideas on things I should do or settings i need to change would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

Are you testing against Orcon servers? Perhaps related to this?

those speed that i mentioned were tested against Vocusgroup Chch (I'm in Christchurch). When I tried Vodafone or Spark Chch, I'm getting higher ping (around 30) and 150 - 200mbps/100mbp . It's not doing any better and upload is significantly slower.

Hey man, have you tried the NetComm router that Orcon provide?  I see that was missed from the list of routers you've mentioned.

no, i didn't get their router as i thought i could just use my own routers. But the speed shouldn't be that much of a differences right?

Yes. There are still plenty of  routers out there on the market with mid to high end pricing that won't be able to deliver Gigabit on a Gigabit connection.

oh no, that means i can't use my own router if I'm just a gigabit connection? my router should handle a gigabit connection though.

@nickng77 there are many routers out there that cant do gigabit speeds. even some of those so called expensive gaming routers

what speed does the HG659 give you when connected?

I've noticed that the Orcon servers are slow for the speedtest also.

The Wellington ACSData server gives me much faster speeds (I'm in Palmy though).

I'd always take speedtest results with a grain of salt as there are so many variables. What matters is the speed you're actually using the internet for (streaming, downloading etc). I could do speed tests till the cows came home with sub-optimal results, however I find it doesn't actually matter for real-world applications, as the download speed is usually hampered by the remote servers upload capacity.

totally understand. but if I'm only getting 200mbp from a 900mbp plan, then i might as well use a 200mbp plan. I used to be able to get around 200mbp download on my 200mbp plan.

I posted some speedtests in the thread linked higher up, IMO I think the problem is the Auckland speedtest server that Vocus has is very underpowered as I can get way faster results to other NZ servers like the ones hosted at ufone and 2degrees.

What happens when you try fast.com ?

Also if you are using a Windows PC try using the Ookla speed test app from the Microsoft App store. Usally better than browser.
