Now that is what I call keeping us up to date!!

Giving us a hole lot of info as to what has been happening instead of just saying it will be fixed soon, remember where "geeks" we like to hear the little things as well as the big things in detail, (well at least I do).

Thank you very much for the detailed update Duncan!

good news!
nice to see some positive action with the upgrade getting priority/escalation :)
Duncan, approx what time will the upgrade happen? (there isn't a time scheduled for "planned maintenance/upgrade" on the official status page?)
-I want to try and do some 'before' and 'after' speed tests etc ;)

Yep, I updated you guys before I had a chance to get the website updated! It is updated now: http://www.orcon.net.nz/system_status/

Scheduled for 8pm tonight, so all things going smoothly you should be better off from around 8.15pm.

hi duncan:

should it be Update 5/06/08. instead of Update 5/05/08 on your system status page?

cheers

Duncan.

It's great to see an official and quite full response to all the posts.
Also nice to see the possible end of the problems.

But however much I'm waiting for the resolution, there are some truths about Orccon that are becoming apparent.

You're explaining how gaming/p2p/streaming applications from the heavily grown user base created the problem.
You're also saying that there is no blocking.
What everyone from the support helpline is saying: "There is no traffic shaping"
What you're saying: "We're prioritizing non UDP/streaming traffic".

One thing becomes apparent.
Doesn't matter what plan one is on (auto-sense, big cap, new LLU, business).
Everyone is subject to traffic shaping.
And that shaping is done quite stupidly. Meaning www.liveleak.com (as in the page) would load very fast, but any video inside that page would not.

I really don't like the fact you are still trying to deny a couple of truths we all know.
You won't have any of us believing that you purchased the very shiny and expensive Layer 7 device to simply "have it", it would be commercial malpractice.
Wouldn't it be nicer if you were slightly more open and we knew exactly what the rules are?
It shouldn't take over a month of your support saying "Please reset your modem" to finally come out with you hands up.
Well, maybe on in this case, as I still think there is more to it than what you're telling here.

Excellent news. I just hope that finally my speeds are restored to what they were a month ago.

redkea: Orcon are blocking .mp4 (say goodbye to itunes podcasts), .flv (say goodbye to youtube), and .avi (say goodbye to bittorrent)

I've created a randomly generated 2MB file - hosted in the USA for people to download.

http://g33kbomb.com/orcon_respect.mp4
http://g33kbomb.com/orcon_respect.avi
http://g33kbomb.com/orcon_respect.flv
http://g33kbomb.com/orcon_respect.wav
http://g33kbomb.com/orcon_respect.zip
http://g33kbomb.com/orcon_respect.tgz
http://g33kbomb.com/orcon_respect.exe

The first three are 4KB/sec - the latter four are at fullspeed. I am using wget for testing. Obviously this only applies to Orcon customers - but other users please try as well.

Good one Orcon. Keep up the good work!

I just downloaded the first four  and they came down at average of 75KB/sec so things look better than last nite.  Even NASA is going great again...

Hey guys - we've run into some delays with the upgrade. I'm expecting it'll be complete at around 10 this evening now, instead of 8 as expected.

I'll let everyone know once its done.

cheers

thanks Thomas, that's a relief - I'm sitting here doing speedtests and my second test was even worse than my first

10:22,i'm going off orcon , ever since 22-25 march (during the release of ADSL+2) my internet has pretty much died, I can no longer use applications like Ventrilo(Lags + disconnections), WoW(As soon as i load my char everything freezes , or sometimes it gets stuck at loading char) , Warcraft 3 DotA(Disconnects me from Battle net and also ingame within 5-20 seconds, sometimes it doesnt even connect to battlenet properly).Customer Service is a joke , emailed them about interleaving once, took atleast 2 weeks to reply from about 4 emails i sent.I have been telling myself that they will fix it, its June now, and no its not my equipment(router, computer, filter, splitter etc). Now im screwed for life as im in one of their contracts and let's just say im not very financially capable to pay for the disconnection fee.

Thumbs up orcon.
