cokemaster: I’m surprised that they don’t route the VoWifi via the same path as VoLTE.

They do I'm sure

That is what I would have thought too, however my MIL uses VoWiFi and she sounds awful when I am talking to her on my Vodafone connection that is VoLTE and my wife's Spark phone too, we have given up and use messenger!

I know it's not on the 2D 3G network as where she is there is almost 0 coverage. the VoWiFi is hooked up with a 2D broadband connection and she is using the standard FritzBox

@Delorean If I am calling someone off-net I turn off Wi-Fi calling and use VoLTE the call quality is superior

(One great thing about living in a VoLTE coverage area)

@linux - my MIL isn't in a VoLTE area, unfortunately, however, based on the comments, if the VoWiFi is basically VoLTE, then why would the call quality be crap on VoWiFi and 3G??

@Delorean The handset does not display HD calling over Wi-Fi so I don't believe it is, Calls to 2degrees numbers so very clear over Wi-Fi calling

@linux - so you are saying the VoWiFi is not HD off-net? (Whereas VoLTE is HD between all three providers?)

is the VoWiFi solution not fully implemented with 2d yet, meaning they need to enable off-net HD calling, whereas if you are in a 2D VoLTE area, you are getting HD off-net on VoLTE

2d VoLTE is 100% HD calling between all NZ carriers, I have done lots of testing, Vo-WiFi I am only telling you of my experience as I use it daily along with VoLTE

Edit:

If the call starts on Vo-WiFi off-net I end the call and turn off WiFi calling and get the call onto VoLTE and they always say you are soooo much clearer now what did you do!

Just came back to have a look a this thread I created and I have no idea what this VoLite or VoWifi means? I have never seen or heard of this option.

I only ever see 1 or 2 bars of 4G(On a good day) or 3G and I'm in Christchurch.

Just had a few rough calls for work both us on 2degrees Barrington to Woolston/Ferrymead. Really bad echo and just dead air. Ended up using whatsapp which we seem to default to.

Yep, I've found calls are so bad I'm now looking at moving my 3 lines to Vodafone or Spark to get away from 2degrees. Every time friends and family call off-net, it's a strugle to understand them. I may as well not have a phone number for non-2degrees lines.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

If you are considering moving to Spark or Vodafone, it may pay to reach out to Vodafones chat team and see if they’re still offering the $15 sharer plans. Vodafone also doesn’t tax you for using wifi tethering which Spark does, on a per connection basis (so it adds up quick).

2 calls in the past hour;

Landline call to my 2D on VoWiFi, again couldn't understand half of what they were saying, thankfully it was unimportant.

Then another from 2D (4G) to my 2D (VoWiFi) and while understandable, the quality was still very sub-par (comparable to ~2001 TDMA) despite both ends having good signals.

I struggled to understand my wife last week during an actually important emergency phone call, if it wasn't for the fact that my phone still had ~$800 worth of repayments owing then I'd be back over to Spark in an instant but unfortunately can't budget to do so currently.

FWIW however - I can confirm that 2D VoLTE is live in Kapiti, but I didn't have any chance to actually test it when I was up there last Sunday.

I've signed up to GZ just to weigh in on this issue as well - I've been following this thread since near its inception and have finally given up on 2Degrees out of frustration and moved 3 phones to Vodafone as of today. So far the call quality seems better but I'll report back if it's not actually a sustained improvement.

I sure hope "not far off" is much sooner than the end of the year. Having to get people to txt me stuff because I just can't comprehend street names and suchlike on a VF/Spark to 2Degrees call  is becoming utterly frustrating. I suspect Alexander Graham Bell had better sound quality in 1876.
