rabba: Hi

Does the new VDSL Router come with a built in handset (like the Genius Black) or do you have to use a third party one?

Thanks

Orcon supply a NetComm NF4V VDSL2 / ADSL2+ WiFi Gigabit Modem Router

Key Features:

1 x 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet WAN port for connection to fibre services
4 x 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for wired connections
Wireless N300 Access Point for multiple high speed WiFi connections
2 x FXS ports for connecting a telephone to make VoIP calls  <<<  add your own phone handset
1 x FXO port for landline backup
2 x USB host ports - supports USB storage device for file sharing
Built-in media server. Just add a USB hard drive

* I strongly prefer the BYO option - the old Genius handset was buggy and hard to use (I know - I returned two of them)
This way you can have a simple wired phone, or a wireless phone, on no landline at all - your call :)

No naked DSL availability?

Tempting, but the mascot puts me off.

Genius already is naked (i.e. data without POTS) - so if you don't take the voice service our costs don't go down unfortunately. If you remember when we launched Genius we removed the POTS rental and moved the price point for New Zealand downwards quite substantially but that was a one-time shift.

I did seem to think Orcon was using some sort of VoIP solution, the fact that the page says "Phone line included" made me think it was an actual line rather than a VoIP port. Thanks for clearing that up.

Does this mean I can't reuse an existing generic VDSL2 modem? Or would I just be sacrificing use of the phone part of things if I did? (Full disclosure - I wanted to sell my spare modem to the boss who wants VDSL ;) )

Given free rental of the VoIP capable unit, that'd probably be moot though.

Would a SIP-firmwared Cisco 7940 work with the Orcon phone system?

Except with the Genius handset solution you could have the router/base unit in say your garage and just the handset (and charge craddle) in the house. Now with byo you need to have your handset baseunit next to the router unless you add some more extension wiring.

This is technically possible once you have the auth user/password, but is unsupported by the Orcon helpdesk.

As above - this may be possible, but will be unsupported. The VoIP auth user/pass is already discussed here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=112419, although this is from the ADSL Genius modem (black).

[edit]
I just had a play with my Orcon NetComm VDSL modem, username/passwords were accessible with the method described in the above link:
1) DSL / PPPoE credentials: 'Advanced' > 'WAN Service' > 'edit'
2) VoIP credentials: 'Voice'>'SIP Basic Setting'

YMMV, I take no responsibility for any bear attacks that may result, etc etc

Wait!
Read the "Congratulations ... but before you get too excited ..." sheet that came with the modem

I did but it's not very clear as to who it applies to it doesn't say anything on it about existing Orcon Genius customers as far as I can see it's for those who are not on genius yet ie: new sign ups

the question still remains can a current genius full customer plug the modem in when it arrives or do we really need to wait ....????

you should be able too, it might only have the vdsl settings programmed into it though and not the adsl ones.

I have used that modem for ADSL 2+ on Orcon, but I set it up manually at that time (ie: manually input the user/pass for PPP/VoIP etc).

The auto configuration system will be expecting a particular device, and may not configure the white modem for you if you have not been officially moved to VDSL. I would suggest you just wait :)

Wait until you get a message that the order is completed otherwise you may break your current ADSL and cause problems provisioning your new VDSL.
