Agreed. FWIW I thought it worth mentioning that if there is malware on your network that is causing the increase in usage, you would want to address that regardless of what plan you are on.

The thought occurred to me - but re-enabling the (Genius) router firewall stopped the problem (well so far anyway).

Oh also I must mention, as you have accidently opened the firewall it would pay to change your admin password just as a precautionary measure.

Thanks - all done.
Sounds like a ddos attack due to your firewall being down for that short period, had it happen to me before on Orcon when my firewall settings were off on the modem.
