I'm seeing the same thing...

Citylink - Wellington: 1ms, 870Mbit down, 420Mbit up.
ACSData - Wellington: 1ms, 774Mbit down, 383Mbit up.
2degrees - Christchurch: 7ms, 611Mbit down, 450Mbit up.
2degrees - Auckland: 12ms, 452Mbit down, 467Mbit up.
Internode - Sydney: 35ms, 489Mbit down, 250Mbit up.
WebNX - Los Angeles: 179ms, 75Mbit down, 20Mbit up.
Speedtest.net - Washington, DC: 101Mbit down, 21Mbit up.
Singtel - Singapore: 349ms, 24Mbit down, 3Mbit up.

Speeds are dropping rather quickly - This is tested on the Windows 10 app via Ethernet. I get a whole 2Mbit from some servers I've got in the EU (where I used to get around 200Mbit) so something has changed. At first I thought it was just me.

@NickMack you got any ideas? I can provide access to a host via SSH if you'd like to do any further testing from my connection.

Hiya - Thanks for the offer, escalated to the right people for investigation. I have a couple of people happy to work with us for testing if needed, once I know more, I'll provide an update.

Nick.

Update - We are currently building and deploying 2 additional speedtest servers into LA and Sydney which will provide more visibility for international performance (Network changes have been QA'd and deployed). We should finish the build of the servers today then it will take a day or so for them to appear in the speedtest.net service. In parallel we are working along side Chorus and Enable in this instance to investigate things as well as looking at our QOS configuration/peerings etc. A couple of the customers who have escalated speed issues to me on GZ that are on 1 gig plans have routers that aren't capable of a 1 gig service which we have discussed with those individuals.

More details to come as we learn more.

Nick

to clarify, 2D will be putting in a Sydney and LA server, on their network?

If i did understand that right, impressive move.

That's correct. We already have kit there (Network and Server kit - for example DNS servers (Ipv4/v6).

Out of curiosity, can I ask how much Internet bandwidth these new SpeedTest servers will have available to them?

:-) I'm leaving the Architects to decide that, let's get them in and go from there. https://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/company/news-and-media-releases/2degrees-first-with-100gbe-trans-tasman-interconnect/ and we have the same to US in terms of backhaul.

I have to say; I'm seriously impressed with the 2D's responsiveness to this issue!  I joined Snap around 6 years ago and found them to be the best ISP I had ever been a customer of by quite some margin (& I've seen plenty!).  I was a little apprehensive about the 2D merger but while 1st level support doesn't always get it right it's reassuring to see that the back end techs are still on-to-it! :)

I still miss calling at 2am and being able to speak directly to a real tech tho! :)

Update again - Servers deployed to US & Aus, core network changes completed, in the next 30 mins we will notify Speedtest to make the required changes on their side to make these available (This can take up to 48 hours typically). After that, we will be good to go.

i still miss Mark Petrie being right there in the thick of it, handling faults. (be it at the noc level)

That was a hands on approach to the business :)

Good to see them updating the testing servers on each end!

Also the international speed doesn't matter as much as before now that google, apple and other services that you usually upload to etc. all have cache server and data center in different countries.

I often Skype friends & family back in the UK and they do comment that quality on my side is very poor (whereas Skype to family in Sydney is aleays fine, both me to them and them back to the UK) - wonder if this is the culprit? Some speedtests do drop as low as 1mbps on the upload.
