I've recently been testing my newly minted Gig Fibre connection. There's nothing quite like seeing 100MB/s coming down via the Internet!

However, one area which seems to be lacking (at least for me) is international upload speeds to anywhere other than Aus.

Now, I realise that there are a lot of elements involved in a connection between me and an overseas server, however, I get pretty decent download speeds, but disproportionately abysmal upload speeds:

Aussie is pretty good:

One of the major attractions with Fibre for me was access to significantly better upload speeds, but I'm pretty disappointed in the speeds I'm getting in this regard.

What are the rest of you seeing in terms of international upload speeds?

But I disagree that 'that's the link I'm paying for'; the point of the Internet is to connect you to the world, not just your ISP! :)

Anyway, I don't want to get into a discussion about that; I'm interested in what others are seeing upload speed wise to international locations.

Just tested the same locations you did (plus a few others) and you're not kidding. I swear when I've done international tests before they haven't been this bad. Each of the locations you listed I tried multiple speedtest servers and apart from NZ (which in itself seems a bit hit and miss) & Oz they are all way below what I'd expect - both on the down and uplink.

I'm on 2degrees gigabit fibre (based in Auckland), during the tests (ran on my PC connected by gigabit ethernet) I disabled wifi and unplugged everything else from the Fritz, and the Fritz itself showed data usage was pretty much zero when I was running the tests so nothing else using the connection.

I'm seeing the same thing...

Citylink - Wellington: 1ms, 870Mbit down, 420Mbit up.
ACSData - Wellington: 1ms, 774Mbit down, 383Mbit up.
2degrees - Christchurch: 7ms, 611Mbit down, 450Mbit up.
2degrees - Auckland: 12ms, 452Mbit down, 467Mbit up.
Internode - Sydney: 35ms, 489Mbit down, 250Mbit up.
WebNX - Los Angeles: 179ms, 75Mbit down, 20Mbit up.
Speedtest.net - Washington, DC: 101Mbit down, 21Mbit up.
Singtel - Singapore: 349ms, 24Mbit down, 3Mbit up.

Speeds are dropping rather quickly - This is tested on the Windows 10 app via Ethernet. I get a whole 2Mbit from some servers I've got in the EU (where I used to get around 200Mbit) so something has changed. At first I thought it was just me.

@NickMack you got any ideas? I can provide access to a host via SSH if you'd like to do any further testing from my connection.

Wow @c0ld, that's some comprehensive testing! :)

Ok, so it's not just me then!

Also, for the record, I'm seeing these kinds of speeds regardless of time of day, including at 2am. Always tested on a wired connection.

Actually no, you're paying for the link to your ISP. MOST of the internet (excluding CDNs) is not under the control of your ISP. There are things they can do to help in some cases, but you are not paying to have full speed access to the whole internet Because That's Not The Way Things Work.

I'm not asking for full speed access to the whole internet; I'm a tech, I know how these things work, but as you mentioned, the upload speeds we're seeing are sub-optimal.

And ISPs CAN do something about it; on a competing ISP's service I can get far higher speeds to the same destinations. ISPs are responsible for providing international connectivity to their subscribers, that's why I am a customer; so that I can get connected to the rest of the world.

have you tried increasing your snr to reduce upstream errors? might help a little ;)
