@alasta With me it really took effect once I added a Spark eSim to my phone - I note it happens to Spark too so not just isolated to 2degrees. Speaking with 2degrees they did say the XS Max has baseband issues that can cause a 4G drop. One thing I have not tried was doing a network reset of which I've done now.

I did a network restore and it didn't help. YMMV.

If you do it in the "right" order you don't lose all your wifi passwords (via iCloud Keychain).

Thanks. Sounds like I might be in the market for an upgrade sooner than expected.

You shouldnt have to!!!!

The coverage in Invercargill is well below par for a City of this size. Large parts of the City with no coverage, so not surprised data is an issue. Not sure the other networks are much better. Flat terrain and lack of investment seem to be the issues as the City is full of blackspots. Just ask a real estate person.

Yes, we're all about chasing that $20 margin on an iPhone sale rather than the ongoing revenue from a happy customer.

Company X makes defective products but won't fix it, rather make a new product with the fix and so you are forced to buy the new product.

I'm not making names as I think any company would do that too, car manufacturers for example.

I have a XS Max connected to a different provider which doesn't suffer from this problem so clearly Apple aren't involved in any conspiracy. Neither are 2degrees involved in any conspiracy for the reasons that Salty mentioned above.

It's really just a case of 2degrees needing to investigate this more thoroughly and work with Apple on a solution that doesn't involve replacing expensive handsets.

Yes, the handset teams are in constant dialog with Apple regarding any issues - including this one - that come up. There has also been work with Apple on VoWifi stability issues.

We know it is frustrating, but that's the trade-off you make when you open up the handset market. You could go back to the days of having a choice of 2 phones for sale directly from the mobile network operator, which are updated once a year after undergoing 24 months of intensive type approval testing, I suppose. Not to mention the fact that they are also far more complex than your Nokia 1011 was.

Glad to hear these issues are being worked on.

My roaming trick didn’t work unfortunately - still getting problems with mobile data some days when I leave the house. Still working from home so don’t always notice. I’m trying some other “tricks” I’ve read around the traps but 2Degrees looking into it is what I’m really hanging my hat on.

Is there a way we can stay updated on the progress your team is making?

Not officially; the handset guys are aware of Geekzone though so they may let me or Morgan know if there is any smoking gun to be found. But usually I only bump into them if we're both buying coffee at the same time. We work on different floors (and since COVID people have been WFH much more often too).

@SaltyNZ I'm not looking for anything official but are you able to echo @michaelmurfy comments above i.e. this issue does not appear with the iPhone 12?

I've worked in tech long enough to know incompatibilities happen and am not looking play the blame game. I just want my phone to work reliably when I leave wifi; at this point its either upgrade to a 12 on 2Degrees, or change network and keep my current handset. Thanks in advance.
