On 2Degrees in Christchurch. Recently moved from iPhone 7 (never any issues) > iPhone 11 Pro (having intermittent issues) although this may be a red herring.

I sometimes get decent 4G signal as per bars (and in areas I have used before e.g. central city / residential, not the middle of no-where) but data does not work. No internet, no messages over data etc. Call do work fine.

Toggling aeroplane mode makes no difference.

I do not have a spare phone to try but the handset otherwise works 100% (including in the same locations with issues at other times).

Is there anything I can try or check...it is very frustrating as I miss messages etc as they don't get delivered, but if I look at the phone everything looks fine.

I have checked the APN and it is correct, and the majority of the time 4G works well and as expected. Just sometimes not at all....

Any help appreciated.

I’ve had similar with 2degrees / iPhone X, but I noticed it when I travelling between Invercargill-Dunedin

Would show 3+ bars and 3G but wouldn’t get any data. Sometimes the data wouldn’t work upto an hour later even after I got home until it randomly would start again when it wanted.

I tried to pinpoint it and get more information as I travelled so I could pass it on but then lockdown happened

@phrozenpenguin no way this could be SIM card related

I was also sceptical.

Visited 2Degrees store. Salesperson has same phone and same issue, said it is "kind of annoying". Which is a understatement!

I have just done the 13.5.1 and will hope this fixes things...only other thing I can think of is a full OS restore?

This issues persists, and has done through iOS 12/13/14. The phone otherwise works perfectly.

Now the iPhone 12 is out, I am trying to work out if there is a different wireless chipset used, which might mean I no longer have this frustrating issue (if I was to upgrade). Does anybody know / can point us to the details?

I think I have the following options:

- continue to be frustrated!

- ignore wifi and just use 4g wherever I am (doesn't really work because I want to access devices on LAN when at home)

- change home and work wifi from Unifi to ?? in order to maybe fix it

- upgrade to iPhone 12 if, as above, it has a different chipset

- any other ideas?

Starts out as 4G problem and morphs into 802.11 wifi problem.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Well, its always been a 4G/Wifi problem. Both work fine independently - and the wifi works great for plenty of others between home and work with various devices.

My hypothesis is there is something (firmware/software?) that does do the "handshaking" between leaving wifi and going onto 4G properly. I'm all ears for suggestions of how to fix!

The only time I've had issues with mobile data and iPhones is when I had an XR a few months ago and was travelling to Kirwee via West Milton. 3 bars of 3G. No data. No texts, nothing.

Also was on 2degrees at the time but my fiancée's Oppo A72 in comparison was better(also on 2degrees at the time).

Never had issues in ChCh itself.

Just realised I need to update the original post - but can't find an edit button.

If I toggle aeroplane mode then 4G DOES come back on and work.

So the scenario is:

- at home or work on wifi = data access fine

- leave home or work, phone appears (icon) to have 4G signal, but has no data. So no messages etc get recieved

- toggle aeroplane mode and 4G does work, like it should

It isn't a signal issue and the same happens in various areas i.e. under different cell towers.

My other option would be to cycle aeroplane mode every time I leave home or work, which is very clunky!

Have had the same problem with an iPhone 11 on 2D. Fixed it by turning on data roaming.

I wonder if it has something to do with the old Voda fallback option on 2D but the beauty of being in NZ is you don’t have to worry about getting a roaming bill.

This sounds exciting! But I already have data roaming on....I have toggled and rebooted and we shall see.

I have this exact problem with my XS Max - I’ve been told that the problem is with my XS max, and they had raised it with Apple. This was ~4mo ago. Since I am getting a 12 this year I have not been too bothered by it but the problem with me occurs almost daily and is really quite annoying.

The local 2Degrees store person has the same issue, hence said unlikely Apple could fix. It is super frustrating. Sounds like you are of the view that a 12 would sort it out - what are you basing this on? I wouldn't normally be upgrading so quickly, but if it fixes this issue then it is a no brainer...

Does this problem only affect 2degrees customers? I have a XS Max and I was considering switching to 2degrees but not if there is a risk of encountering problems like this.

Not sure. I considered changing network to try and resolve it...but too much hassle and I was hoping a software update would fix it.

I'm sure if it is widespread then there would have been more of a fuss about it?!
