Edit: yes for Spark and Compass (which use for Voyager transit I think) both around 120 ms.

Spark don't peer with Cloudflare in Auckland so traffic to www.geekzone.co.nz goes to the Sydney node for Spark customers which, at the moment is taking a scenic route

This is my ping response, 10ms round trip up from Wellington to Auckland

Is a shame on the Compass connection with Voyager transit that the Spark route is preferred, I assume the peering between Spark and Cloudflare takes higher precedence over any peering between Voyager and Cloudflare.

Also, is this the second or third time this has happened in the past year?? Are the existing Southern Cross cables est.1999-2000 going the same way as good old HFC I wonder, becoming less reliable with higher 100G data rates/modulation??

2 Degrees website states no known issues....Would have been nice to list the issue there. Im getting 125ms to Sydney in WoW. Over double whats normal.

My WoW (Voyager) was 43 ms earlier but now it's 114. That's still playable but far from normal.

Spark and Voyager's status pages also aren't reporting this issue. This probably annoys me more than it should, but what's the point of having a status page if it's not kept up to date?

The reason I got told a while ago was its not updated for PtW planned work stuff. Good news is the permit expires at 10:00 UTC so almost there. I imagine it would have saved many a phone call to the residential side of Spark and others who are running over SCCN only. It does make me appreciate how much further it is from NZ to Hawaii and back than direct to ALX

@Mahon A increase in latency is something that does not need to posted on the carriers website

Now this is just getting silly it is not a outage / complete loss of service or even part loss of service

They are going around replacing the power systems it is not a breakdown. The system has been operational for 20 years, a few 1/2 day maintenance breaks after 20 years online is not unreasonable. The network is planned to be operational up until about 2030. The new Southern Cross "Next" cable system is just coming online that replaces 1/2 the network with a direct (avoid Hawaii) Los Angles link, it is expected the other half will follow well before the EOL of the rest of it. There are now three path's to Australia so carriers that had the ability (or cared as such) could swap to using TGA or Hawaiki today. I know I reprioritised my company's network this morning to prefer TGA before the maintenance and it was all good as the maintenance was notified to the carriers in advance.

I noticed it yesterday on our work connections (we SDWAN to Melbourne) using Vodafone services here in NZ. Pings were noticeably higher, but did not affect anything meaningfully (other than it made remote access a bit more sluggish).

I dont believe anyone has been complaining about it once they know what is causing it. Of course maintenance needs to be done and I am sure all the retailers were advised of this. I noticed it as my WoW latency to the Aussie servers was more than double and I was on the phone to 2 degrees when I read this thread. I am sure many other gamers also noticed it and lodged and unnecessary call to their ISP.
