i guess noone else really has an answer other than snap have over sold for amount of bandwidth that can be provided at any one time, and yes this could be snap's provider having the data flow issue

the end result is its a data flow problem

Oversold is a relative term, all residential adsl is a effectively shared network best effort service.

Slower speed in peak time is akin to congestion on the motorway on the way home from work at 5pm.

Snap are selling you a service based on a regulated product from Telecom wholesale UBA, EUBA, UBS etc.

The minimum specs are on the telecom wholesale site if you want to read about them

If you look at rough break down of the main parts in the system:

Cabient/Exchange > Backhaul Network > ISP Hand Over > ISP Network > ISP Transit (international/national)

Snap only has control over the last two, either there really is congestion that is out of there control or their is some shaping or management going on.

Apparently there were some routing issues at Snap. I got a very polite email suggesting that now those have been resolved my speed may have gone up.
Sadly that's not the case. Quite the opposite. My speed during busy periods has now halved. On my 11Mbps connection I am now getting 0.98Mbps
And agin threading http://speed.snap.net.nz/speedtest/random3000x3000.jpg (which is what speedtest actually downloads) with 9 connections gives full speed.

If a backhaul is congested, whether it be a local backhaul or international transit, a multi-threaded download will be faster. If you are getting speed issues to http://chrischurch.speedtest.net then it's most likely local backhaul congestion.

btw speed.snap.net.nz isn't maintained anymore

was actually bout to join SNAP but thought i would do a little homework before changeing , very interresting RE. speeds with them .with my current provider im chewing up my 20G in no time and saw snap had a 35GB pack for the same price with my current provider but snaps speed just seem a little dodgy.
here are is my current speed with telecom at present and also with havin a central splitter installed has helped hugely with keeping this speed 24/7 .
i thought i had it bad with xtra????? i think i will stay with them

I have just joined Snap and so far I am happy .. while the speedtests are not that flash, I am at least getting download speeds that are larger than upload speeds, and international HTTP downloads are coming in at over 100kb/sec (used to see around the 10-20kb/sec with Orcon)

pogobull - stay with Telecom would be the advise I would give. They seem to be one of the better ISP's at the moment as long as you are happy with price and data.

thanks. yeah, i gotta settle down on the online gaming a bit and try and save on my usage, shame xtra dont allow the purchase of 1GB or 2 just to get ya threw till the end of the month.

welp, now my sync speed has dropped from 8000 to 6424 and snap say thats fine, however a week ago it was 8000 and i was getting 8mbit downloads direct from snap, now im getting 6mbit and less.

are these people playing games?

sbiddle: The issue could easily be congestion at your exchange also.

You also don't pay for dedicated 6Mbps if you're on a residential ADSL plan - something like that would probably set you back somewhere in the vicinity of $500 per month.

I believe you pay for what, 32kbit/s CIR?

I have an update to this.
Not sure if it's completely true.
But since my issues and numerous discussions with Snap they stated that I am now routed through their new peering point in Auckland.
Not completely sure how new this is, given www.robtex.com and www.peeringdb.com listed auckland peering for some time, same as wellington (not sure if this is the same type of peering).

I have to say my speeds are now far more consistent, no slowdowns of national traffic.
If this is the case then it tends to suggest Snap aren't buying enough backhaul bandwidth from Telecom to get the traffic to Chch for those who don't live there (or something on those lines).
I know for sure that it's not exchange congestion, since that apparent change has made things so much better. Plus I've gone out and installed a second line with a different v small akl provider and no congestion there either.

PS.
Noticed that both peering in Auckland and Wellington support IPv6, but not Christchurch.

it is a backhaul problem, snap having more customers than bandwidth, this is where the slow downs are. however its just another isp that cant really handle what they say.

Pacific fibre are building an international submarine cable, it will be good for the prices ISP's can buy international transit at but will have next to no effect on domestic transit costs.

Im about 3 weeks into a 12 month term with Snap. While I still find them very good, download speeds at night have been only slighly better than a 256kbit connection. I have had a few issues with streaming YouTube - normally the first and second take a while and then the rest seem to be ok.

However, everything else is super ok and I haven't bothered with a support ticket yet for the issues
