Hi,

Why is it that snap is great during the day when there is not really many people using internet getting speeds next to 7MB.

then as soon as 6:30pm - 7pm comes along the speed then goes down to 2 - 3MB.

network congestion is just an excuse rather than saying the truth, like all of the other isp's that have shared bandwidth speed will very. So at night with the amount of users on the net makes the bandwidth alot less and we see this as the speeds drop.

4 months i have been ringing snap about speed issues, they said replace the router, done that. next they say its the line, well when you are syncing at 8064 and 764 the line isnt at fault.

the only answer but noone will say it is snap can not handle the user base they have at night, i'ld be happy to have a dedicated 6MB 24/7 thats what we pay for not to get rubbish.

The issue could easily be congestion at your exchange also.

You also don't pay for dedicated 6Mbps if you're on a residential ADSL plan - something like that would probably set you back somewhere in the vicinity of $500 per month.

Then you should do some research into how much a dedicated link with guaranteed speeds cost. What you pay for is a best effort service, what you're getting is a best effort service and I'm sure it'll even say that in the terms and conditions.

this is not all about dedicated but when your speeds go up and down like a yoyo

I had been told by snap that they asked chorus about congestion on my exchange and they said there was no congestion, i live in a town with 3000 people, most of them are farmers chours told me one day that there was only 2 bins on dslams in this exchange and there is fibre running to it.

i live all on 3 streets over from the exchange.

In the peak time "slow" period.. is there any difference in speed comparing a download from a local source (ie: in NZ) source vs international source?

they both are slow minimum download is 38kb/s international and alittle more nz wide but still around the 1 - 2mbit

i wouldnt put all the blame Snap, my download and torrent speeds are as fast as my line allows any time of the day, if anything they are better now than they have ever been.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Sounds like exchange/cabinet backhaul congestion or ISP handover link congestion.

You should report the issue to Snap to they can report it to Telecom wholesale. If it gets to a certain level they may upgrade the backhaul.

Out of interest what exchange/cabinet are you on?

Also you really do need to bear in mind you're paying for a residential grade best effort shared network service which has no guarantee of minimum performance.

Dedicated bandwidth is expensive, you are not paying for a dedicated bandwidth connection. 10Mbit dedicated bandwidth costs multiple hundreds per month.

adsl2 is due to be upgraded sept 2011 and vdsl is ment to be up and going by the end of the month.

i have raised the issue with snap for the past 4 months chorus said the exchange is fed via fibre and not congested.

on in the night downloading a file from snap 10mb file i get 800kps but when i do a speedtest i only get 2mbit or sometime less, sounds to me some shaping maybe doing it cos come 5:30pm everyday the speed drops from 680kps to around 150kps.

i also live 3 streets over from the exchange.

I am having the same issue.
Answer from Snap was: exchange congestion.
But a simply threaded download proved that bandwidth was there!!!
I think there's a bigger issue and Snap are hiding behind a very easy excuse: Telecom.

yes a threaded download with orbit or something like that does make things better but thats not the solution

10 past 10 at night, started at 6.50mbit then slowly dropped back to 5.78mbit

the speed is there, there is no congestion, the only way for me to get decent speeds at night is thread otherwise its a joke.

Could we establish which exchanges we are connecting to?
It could be plausible if we're all at the same exchange.
But if suddenly the same issue is explained as "exchange congestion" in several places at once then there's something fishy.

I'm attached to Auckland BCD Mayoral drive.

BTW, I have quite a few friends and customers with the same exchange and none are experiencing the same issues.

waimate exchange in the south island 3500 people and most of the are farm that are on satilite internet there would be at a guss 2000 houses in the town centre and chorus said the exchange is not congested and that its feed with fibre.

Note i am in a 10MBit zone however this is unsure if its before or after the adsl2+ rollout
