Well, below is what I've got.
It must be inside orcon as I don't believe multiple providers would fail at the same time.

30/11/10 9:31 am International Degradation

Sites accessed via the LA link are showing degraded service.

We have made changes to the routing to bypass this link but it will take some time for this to clear and the situation is being monitored by our engineers.

Dunno why I seem ok so far :)

It's funny how Orcon can say that it's LA traffic that was affected when google via equinix from Sydney was out as well.

Smoke and mirrors I say.

Don't you think it's a bit cheeky to first say "Facebook.com and Google tracing fine here..."
and then 6 minutes later quote Orcon's service status that confirms there was a problem?
If you don't have a problem count yourself lucky but spare a thought for those who ARE having issues.

And strangely www.facebok.com IS an actual website, which wasn't working just as facebook.com

They were tracing fine here at the time of my post.
My post was not aimed at rubbing peoples noses in it and I apologize if it came across that way.

Depends on the return route :-)

Google may have been sending traffic back to LA rather than over Sydney.

Pretty sure we had a convesation about return routes before? :P

BTW, What was the source IP for your traceroutes? I will be able to confirm.

Sounddude

You've asked for my source IP a few times.
Not sure why you'd need this.
Afte all you always say all dsl customers are being treated the same way.

So please explain why this latest supposed LA outage only affected some dsl customers, not all?
Doesn't sound like it was either the upstream issue or all dsl customers are equal.

The traceroutes you give are not from a DSL line, they are from colocation. Do you buy DSL from a colocation customer of Orcon? or are you actually a customer of Orcon?

I need the source IP so I can get to the bottom of your routing issue. If you don't want my help then thats fine.

As for your question about why LA only effected some DSL customer. When you have multiple upstreams like Orcon does. There is a need to balance traffic across them. We use AS Prepends to perfer some carriers over others for some netblocks. The DSL netblocks are big, so they get carved up.

When LA had the issue, it was still advertising prefixes to the internet, but dropping them once they came into the LA router. Any netblocks which had the LA site preferred had issues.

It could be anything, the more information you can give to technical support, the quicker they can isolate the issue, and see what is going on.

Sounddude works for Orcon and wants to help you, why are you being so difficult?
